Are you hunting at 2000 yards? Or are you using your scope as binos?
Shooting animals at 2k. Nope. But regularly shoot all my rifles between 1200-1800. And obviously closer. Animals I try to limit 1k in perfect conditions. Personal reasons. Infact I really try to keep it under 700. My rifles and us are very capable just weird things happen the farther you stretch it. But we like magnification. Aim small miss small kinda thing. We’ve never had an issue with shooting around 25 power on game and we do quite a bit of it. Majority of my rifles were 25 power scopes. Some higher and a few of my go to’s have 18’s. I hate those 3.6-18’s. I’ve never shot it below 10 power and the majority of the time it’s on 18. On animals I don’t like it and I tune all my loads at 1k and it’s really hard to shoot small with it. Also, yes every year there’s a time or 2 where your quickly using your rifle/scope to ID an animal vs pulling out your spotter.

I wouldn’t
Economy of scale and SWFA’s track record would point towards not all models getting these updates

You're pissing in my cornflakes! I'm holding out hope that Swfa is going to offer some positive improvements across the board and will, at the very least, offer an improved (but durable) 3-9x42 and 3-15x42. I'd honestly settle for in-stock current 3-9x42 though.

Yep just stock the 3-9 and 6x
The fixed 10x also got a new reticle and it’s a step in the wrong direction

@Formidilosus: there have been a couple of mentions in the threads comparing this reticle with the THLR - Ryan said he'd recommended a simplified THLR to Maven, and a couple of us have noticed what appears to be similar features.

Given your long time with the THLR (and that you have published the most detailed description of it on the net), what do you see as the key similarities and differences between the two? Does the SHR-MIL funtion similar to the THLR in practice? Does it give much up for most practical situations? And so on ...

Any reflections gratefully accepted!

Well, to be honest I think you're like about no one here. And not even close to what anyone wants with our western mountain rifles.

I don’t know about that. You maybe not and maybe not the majority of people who are on this thread… but not sure if that qualifies as most. There’s multiple fine options in this size, weight, mag range. Like the trijicon.

There was not a single scope in this size or mag range without a stupid reticle- not one.

The Trijicon is a good scope, its reticle is not good for all around hunting.

There’s not really any good options in the 4-24/5-25 range.

Nightforce ATACR 4-20x, ATACR 5-25x, NX8 4-32x, about 5 different S&B’s, Minox ZP5, SWFA 5-20x, Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30x, etc, etc. The 24-30x mag range scope is probably the most common on the market.

You believe the market is missing another 24x scope?

I just am not sure the statement of “most wanting this” to be true.

Being that this is on Rokslide, it’s probably safe to say that I was referring to posters here. The average person doesn’t care about any of this.

Be honest… How often do you actually kill big game animals in steep/broken terrain out west? Based on your descriptions here my guess would be very few if any.

Do you have a source for this?
There was a post on here a month or so back and someone here had access to an article behind a paywall and put up screen shots.

Correct, but that article was only about the fixed 10x

The NX8 already exists in this approximate magnification (2.5-20 or 4-32) and scope weight (28oz vs 26oz). If that's what you want it exists already, doesn't it?
The 2.5-20 doesn’t work on my long actions, and the 4-32 has issues. Everyone knows this. I own some. They never should have went 4-32. It’s just doesn’t work like it should

Half those are way too heavy. I’m talking sub 30oz. For me has to be FFP, MOA and useable reticle. And top out around 24-25

To each his own, but I very much dislike shooting at game on more X than I need. A little X goes a long way for me, and I rarely go much higher than 10X, even when messing around at 1K+. Aside from loosing valuable FOV, I find too much X to be quite irksome when trying to steady up.

But I've done a fair amount of hunting and shooting with a peep and open sights, so maybe I've just gotten used to making due with less X.

Form rattled off numerous others already, no need to beat a dead horse in the fact you have numerous options already. Some of use are looking for a more refined version of the SWFA 3-9 which doesn't exist in the same weight range yet.

Well I am a western mtn hunter. Hunt harder country and deeper then most. I see others with similar setups and wants. So idk how I’m like no one else? This thread is under the long range hunting area. I’m not talking pickup hunting with 15lbs rifles. I’m running custom setups, carbon stocks or xlr chassis, cf barrel, bat, Kelbly light weight actions. 8.5-10 lbs. strapped to your pack kinda rigs. Again this is under long range hunting, I’m not talking my sheep hunting ultra light Kimber

Ok. Sure. There’s sorta some options but not really. I simply said I wish they woulda made it a little higher mag then all of the sudden people are jumping down my throat. If I don’t jump on some band wagon I’m not a real western mtn hunter blah blah blah. Just ridiculous. I can pretty much guarantee I hunt more and harder than a lot on here. Infact I usually don’t work oct-nov just so I can hunt. That’s fine is people want a replacement for that scope but what’s so bad with me wanting something? Anyways, I’m over this thread. Have a good one.
