Maui Fishing

My wife is wanting to vacation in Maui. I have a son that is obsessed with sharks and whales. All my kids love fishing. This is asking a lot, but anyone ever book a day of fishing somewhere and get to see whales and sharks while you're out?

Although not a fishing trip, my kids really enjoyed this submarine tour on Maui and we saw both whales and sharks, among many other things, on the trip.

The Pailolo between Maui and Molokai is a big travel corridor for the humpbacks in winter. Any fishing trip in the channel would certainly encounter quite a few whales.

The fishing in Hawaii is very hit and miss. And they will also sell your catch. They no longer allow shark cages which they were feeding the sharks. The submarine deal sounds better.

My wife and I visited Maui a couple years ago near the end of January. Lots and lots of whales were spotted from shore at the resort. We were also able to get close to them while on a guided snorkeling/kayaking trip. Although we didn't see any sharks I would highly recommend taking time to go snorkeling.

As others have said, fishing can be hit or miss and not being able to keep our catch was a turn off to us so we didn't book a fishing trip.

I was just in Maui in April and we saw quite a few whales both from shore, big snorkel tour boat, and our fishing charter boat. I've also been in October a few years ago and we didn't see any whales but we didn't go out on a boat that time.

Depending on the charter, you don't get to keep your catch. Some will determine how much you can take or eat, but it's certainly not all of it. They just troll around with 50 wides and you might snag a bonita. Its a total racket

We kept almost everything we caught, which admittedly wasn't a lot. You could tell they weren't happy with how much we took but they didn't say anything.

Whale watching has a season. If that is a priority, you'll want to dial that in if you have schedule flexibility. It's typically in the winter months.

If we're talking strictly fishing it's gotta be FL over HI but HI has a lot to offer that FL can't and this is coming from someone who grew up going to the keys every year and still loves FL

How old is your kid? Anytime from Dec to April you will see tons of whales, even from shore. Never been on a fishing charter but there's lots of complaints about it being being a racket, so do your due diligence. If you go on a charter you for sure will see whales though in winter. I've seen reef sharks before diving at mala ramp in lahaina, but that was years ago. I haven't really been around there since the fire. call one of the snorkel shops in lahaina they'll probably point you in the right direction. the caged shark dives are on Oahu.

Take an 8wt fly rod and cruise the reefs for bonefish and golden travally.

I can't speak about the fishing, but we did a half-day snorkeling tour to Molokini Islet with Redline Rafting last Feb. and honestly we did not see a ton of fish, I've had much better DIY snorkeling in HI, but we did see a LOT of whales. They put on quite a show for us. If I did it over again I'd just do the 1.5 hour whale watching tour. Redline is a good outfit.

You want to see whales go during whale season and take a charter specific for it. You'll see whales on other charters but I would take a dedicated boat. Much better experience. I just got back from an Alaskan cruise and saw more whales than in Hawaii but no babies in Alaska and way less breaching.

Ive been on 3 fishing charters. One good(start me up), one eh(bottom fishing-prepare to get your bait eaten by trigger fish...alot), and one crappy one. That crappy one was more the captain than anything. You'll probably see whales on any fishing charter during whale season unless its at the tail end. There are many of them all around in February. As noted you can see them from the beaches alot.

Pro tip, go snorkeling at Black Rock and swim out to the end(CAREFUL OF THE CURRENT if you go too far) and put your head under water. I dont know of its something about the acoustics od the rock out there but the whale songs are way clearer and loud. If you like to sit around and listen to elk bugle you'll get a kick out of it. It reminds me of them. And you'll see like 3 people out there with you. Noone realizes it.

Im pretty sure its the the depth you are at. Its easier to hear out in deeper water when your close to the surface but I have heard them at 15' below surface while close to shore. Sometime you can even hear dolphins when the pod comes in close. When the first whales arrives its quite the shock cause its loud.

OP Easy button is Maui Ocean center see all the local sharks you want there safely behind glass. Never know the mentality of the shark you come across in the wild. Especially when you have the open ocean sharks coming in close to shore cause they are hungry, as they are usually the most aggressive ones.
