Marlin 1894…. in 10mm

This thread inspired me to finally get the new furniture on my .41 Mag. This was my uncle’s truck gun on the ranch for many many years before he passed, so the wood that was on it was pretty rough. Turns out the new Ruger production stocks fit the pre-Remlin guns pretty well.

I’m going to try and grab one of these 10mm rifles and see if it will cycle the 10mm Magnum loads I run for my S&W 610. GRT says it should be able to push 180gr XTPs and A-frames above 1800fps from a 16” barrel.

Damn, that turned out great...

My 63 is one of the Browning repops. Beautiful rifle. I’ve got 90s in 22 Short, 22 Long, and 22 WRF. The WRF was my grandfather’s whitetail poaching rifle. He kept his family fed with it during some hard times in the early 70s.
As a kid, I shot a bunch of ground squirrels with my dad’s Model 63. It is topped with a Weaver K4 with a plain crosshair. I ended up with it, and I have good intentions to take it out after gray squirrels one of these days.

I just got to zero and then play with a buddy's Henry Homesteader 9mm carbine semi-auto. The entire time I was thinking "if they made this in 10mm it would be the perfect pairing with my backcountry handgun!"
Of course, I am still waiting on the right deal on the S&W lever gun in 357 to pair with my EDC revolver for around the farm use.
Do I NEED either paring? Nope. Do I want them both? YES! Also a lever gun/revolver combo in 41 mag, just because.

Mine came in today.

Initial impressions:
  • Way better build quality and way smoother action than my 90’s era ‘JM’ Marlin .41 Mag
  • Holds 10 in the tube (vs the 8 in the .357 Mag Trapper). Earlier literature showed the 10mm and .357 having the same mag capacity, which they’ve now updated to show the correct numbers.
  • Bolt throw is about 1/4” shorter than .357/41/44 Mag rifles. This, coupled with the lack of a rim, really make the action slick. This is by far the fastest and smoothest lever gun I’ve ever worked, including Win 92/94 and Henry rifles as well. And it’s not even broken in yet.
  • Handling with the shorter barrel and sight picture are awesome. I can’t wait to get this to the range. I also can’t wait to thread on a can.
I’m still interested in converting this to 10mm Magnum, but initial trials with feeding the loads from my 610 revolvers show there’s going to be some significant hurdles to overcome. For those that don’t know, 10mm Magnum is a 10mm Auto case that’s .250” longer with a thicker case web to handle 41/44 Mag pressure levels. Starline makes readily available brass for it. Things that definitely have to change to feed 10mm Mag:
  • Larger diameter mag tube is going to be required. The 10mm 1894 uses the same small diameter tube as the .357 Mag. The long fat 10mm Mag cases bind before they can make the turn into the magazine tube. A .41/44 magazine tube should fix this.
  • Bolt stop and ejector will need mods. The 10mm bolt throw is about 1/4” shorter than the .41 Mag bolt throw. The ejector also sits about this much further forward. As is, it would eject a fired 10mm Auto case but not an unfired one. I’m betting .357 Mag parts can be swapped in to convert this, but I’m going to have to mess with it and see.
