Where are all the Mark Twain NF turkey hunters at? I spent a couple days down there and it has me stumped. I have traveled all over the US turkey hunting and not sure if the birds there always act like they did or if it was just a timing thing.

Where in the MTNF did you go?

It has been an odd year from what I've experienced and from other's I've talked to.

Quiet birds for the most part. I took my son out during the youth weekend and heard a lot more than the past week.

Birds always seem difficult to call the first week or even two of our season. Lots of birds may gobble a few times on the limb, hit the ground with a bunch of hens, then shutup for most of the morning. That said, by the time May rolls around I usually have better luck finding a willing participant that talks a bit more. That all being said, other than a couple good gobbling days, I have noticed alot of quiet mornings this season. Lots of friends have noticed the same.

Spent the first two weeks of the Mo season in SE Missouri. Been hunting there for 33 years, worst year I have ever seen for gobbling and workable birds. 4 of us hunted 11 days and only killed 2 mature birds. I believe the warm weather weeks ago had something to do w it. I have never seen it that green either. Also know of 6 snakes, 4 of the copperhead kind and 2 of timber rattler kind that will not bother anyone again.

Probably because everybody is traveling all over the US too. Those turkeys been catching hell from people coast to coast all season.

If it’s like every other NF in the Midwest it’s getting pounded by southerners trying to extend their season. This year in IN was absolutely ridiculous and the attitudes of some of these guys is enough to make me wanna push harder for non resident delays… end rant but yeah turkeys are just turkeys. That’s why we hunt them. Never know when some random day will be the one he comes hammering in. I’ve called in 2 silent birds this spring. Like nothing, no drumming no gobbling, just full surprise the shit out of me quiet.
