Making heavy bullets work in a 300 Rum

I have an older Christensen Carbon Classic in 300 RUM and I love it. Light to carry, manages the Rum recoil well, it even has a reputation in my circle of friends as a killer and has not only harvested dozens of animals for me it has done the same in their hands as well as it is barrowed often. With 180 grn. accubonds factory ammo it shoots 1/2 MOA-ish (which is all I shoot in it now) once you feed it 200s or 210 ABLR or Bergers it opens up. With it's least favorite being the HSM 210 bergers that I could never get to group better than an 1"-1-1/4", even when I ran them out to 400 yard hoping they would "stabilize". I don't reload but would like to it's just with kids, work, travel and life makes me think I would drop the coin on the equipment, and it would all collect dust.

I run Kenton dials on a Zeiss 5 X 25 and am confident with them to 600 YDs but would like to push my shooting further and have been playing with hard dope and a kestrel to push my confident shooting to 800+. That being said running some heavier bullets with higher BCs would be nice. Any ideas, and if it is just reload, maybe some guidance on techniques on finding loads for heavier bullets that have worked for you in the past.

Had really good luck with the 208s Eldms, you’ll probably need to mess with seating depth a bit. Mag box length will become an issue at some point as well.

Do you measure ogive when you reload? You could start with the ogive measurement of some match Hornady factory ammo, then seat to the same measurement with the 208s as recommended above, or try to 220gr ELD X.
Also might be worth considering primer and powder choice, and cleaning your rifle if you haven’t. Cheers!

I would shoot what it likes. Good bullet and accurate is a good combination in my view.

300 RUM and you dont reload?

I run Berger 230gr OTM's through my Sendero. Though once my stash it burned up. I will most likely switch over to ELD's just due to price/availability.

Just starting to reload but would be curious of your load for the 220 ELD Xs and the efficacy you have witnessed with them on game. Definitely like the 180s for sub 600 yd kills but want to buck the wind a little better to reach out further.

That changed this weekend as I bought the first round of equipment. Would like to hear what combination or procedure you use to load, deburr flash holes, trim necks, crimp or not to crimp. Just doing the research to start working up loads. even yardages you use to test, I have heard when you are loading heavy for long range you should test at long range not just 100 or 200 yds so any insight is appreciated.

Everything I have looked up says it's a 1 in 10, but it's not stamped on the barrel like most of my other guns. I definitely understand the twist stabilization thing my nosler 22 hates heavy bullets and my 22 valkyrie doesn't like light bullets due to twist rates. For a 300 rum is a 1 in 10 twist a "fast light bullet" twist rate and working to find a load for a 200-210 grn bullet a futile effort?

I do my load development at 100 yards. Once I find what I am looking for then I shoot at 200 and 500.

My 300rum is a 1/10 and it will stabilize 220 grains.
I normally don't crimp mine.
