Magnification recommendation for a do it all bino

IMO the Meostars are 100% on par with the SLC and actually better with chromatic aberration. There is a pair of 15x56’s Meostars on the MM classifieds with a harness for $800, the member also sells on here or use to. You could pick those up and a pair of 8x42 Meostars and have an awesome glassing setup.

For me there isn’t a one and done bino, if your not getting a spotter but plan on using a tripod I would personally use less expensive 8’s like a vortex viper on the chest and use 15’s on a tripod. You will be amazed by the 15’s in open country.

Obviously money is a factor as well. Unless your willing to step up to NL quality I think you're better off with two pairs of binos for now. One for the chest and one for the tripod.

FOV is king for quick glassing or even tripod glassing for that reason i would skip the IS binos. They are OK for a truck bino or for backpacking where you’re just wanting to look at things. For hunting where I plan on being somewhat picky with what I’m killing they stay at home and I’m bringing a big bino and tripod or my 8’s on the tripod and spotter for close looks.

If you are planning on doing a lot of all day sitting like antelope hunting high quality 8’s will outperform high quality big binos or a spotter mid day due the way the Mirage effects high power glass.

I’ve never hear of Meostars but will check them out. I am leaning towards selling the 16x42 IS and the 18x56 UHDs and then purchasing 15x56s. Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve heard good things about the UHD’s but haven’t used them, not sure how much you will gain going from the 18UHD to a 15SLC or Meopta. I’d probably find a pair to loom through before going all in on them.

Thanks for the input. It is a challenge for sure to pick, especially when going to the store and looking side by side in artifical lighting. I am going to see if Cabelas will let me check out a few different pairs outside near dusk. the 18 UHDs are a good bino, clear picture, but at low light and with a narrow field of view I have a hard time using them.

I know when I moved to a 15 I was able to pick up a pile of shed antlers i had been overlooking for years. The FOV vs a spotter made a huge difference.

I sold most of my glass and currently have NL8x32’s for my chest and NL14’s with a Meostar S2 sporter.

The 8’s always go on the tripod first even in big country for the huge FOV. If I had to only chose one bino to keep it would be my 8x32’s over anything I’ve used.

My IS 20’s are my least used bino, I normally hand them out to people going with me that don’t have big binos or want to carry a tripod and spotter. I will still carry my big binos and tripod 99% of the time over the IS. I can see so much more detail with my 14’s vs the 20 sigs. Last fall we were looking at a bull across a canyon at 800 yards and could tell if he was a 5 or small 6, I tossed my 14’s on the tripod and could tell exactly what he was instantly.
On the flip side, when I still had my 15 Meostars my buddy with NL12’s and I were watching some bulls at probably close to a mile. We couldn’t tell what he was with the 12’s but the 15’s had just enough advantage in that instance that they outperformed the NL’s which shows IMO just how good the glass is.

10x 42 or 50…. No debating IMO. This comes from someone who owns and loves 12x NL and several 8x for archery/ still hunting. 10x are the balance. Get a solid pair with good FOV and you will be set. Love my 12’s for fun hunting and my 8’s for archery but if I had to have 1 set it would be 10’s

8x32 or 8x42s..

10s are the boomer favorite, 8s have a bigger fov and are easier to handhold. I don’t think that there’s ever been a time that missed something with 8s that I would’ve caught with 10s.

Second choice is the nl 12s.
