You can get them opened up a bit. I’ve noticed they have quite short throats as well even with the short OAL.

Porting wise the opening of the action is done to allow a longer overall length cartridge to eject

The box mag can be lengthened a bit as well by grinding out material.

My smith does it and I’ll try and get a couple of photos when my RPM 84L build is complete

If you like a CRF action a Mauser M98 would give you around .450 more magazine length. Think the mag is around 3.30

Just use a Kimber 84L (long action) as they must be around 3.3”? This is in reference to the Mauser suggestion. The Kimber would be a lot lighter, stainless, great trigger and safety and newly manufactured with control round feed.

I understand some of the actions have a blocked out area behind the mag box (have read the 300wsm kimber mag box can be opened up on the montana/ascent action without modifying anything else since the bolt travels a fair bit behind the mag box already), does anyone know how long you can modify a kimber 84 short action? Or can someone check if the short action mag box has this blocked out section at the rear? I’m debating a 7mm-08 ascent but am hoping for some coal wiggle room.

Any more info on this?

After looking close at my 84M it seems there is room to allow for longer loads. The actual opening in the receiver is 2.93 and some change. The magazine has walls .040 thick and there is some room to spare (~.015) when installed. If I thinned the font and back walls to .020 and could stretch the mag out ~.010, that would be a gain of .050 without any work on the receiver.
