Hey guys currently am a high school student in Alaska avid hunter and fisherman will probably be going to college in the lower 48 soon looking for a college that has a good engineering program mechanical or petroleum preferably petroleum but also and more importantly great hunting grounds nearby. Thanks in advance!

Schools in the southern states are just as good as in the northern states and are much less expensive. I just mention that to help narrow your search. Clemson University in SC has an excellent engineering program and is located in a rural area. I'm sure there are others.

My experience with getting an engineering degree is that the study time required didn't leave much time for anything else. Others maybe didn't have to work as long and hard as I did to graduate.

if you are interested in hunting, look for states that will sell tags at resident prices and rules to college students. For example, Iowa lets full time college student get resident deer tags. I have to wait 5+ years for the same tag as a nonresident.

Perhaps every state does this, but I would double check if I was you.

Take a serious look at the University of Wyoming! Great engineering programs, and SUPER reasonable tuition especially with Alaska being a WUE state. I'm from Alaska too, graduated high school in '18 and when I was looking into the price of college, it was actually cheaper for me to go to UW than anywhere in Alaska when I factored in cost of living. Laramie is a great area, with lots of antelope, deer, elk, and some bird hunting close by. It's easy to find other students there who are into the hunting and fishing stuff, and if you're willing to give up your AK residency you qualify for in-state tags after your first semester. I didn't end up doing it because I didn't want to lose my AK stuff, so I ended up tagging along on a bunch of friends hunts instead of buying my own tags. But you'll run into that regardless of where you go. I loved going to school there, it's the only place I've ever visited that's made me slightly consider leaving AK. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

This is my buddy's antelope sitting on the bar of one of the big downtown college bars. If that doesn't sum up Laramie, I don't know what will.

I went to school at Missouri S&T in Rolla, MO. Pretty tough program but well respected in the areas you are looking into. Lots of whitetail opportunities in Mark Twain National Forest nearby.

But..if I could go back and do it, I’d probably look into a program out west as well. Laramie would be a pretty compelling place for a college guy to be.

The ol' Cowboy Saloon! The Buck has kind of turned into more of a "club" style atmosphere, with pop/rap music and dark dance floors. Our crowd mostly frequented the Cowboy, which mostly stays true to its "western dance hall" roots.

haha the buckhorn I remember marching the goal posts out of war memorial to the buckhorn and cutting it in to pieces with a hack saw . I still have my piece ! When rolled out of Laramie for the last time fuel at the Sinclair was still under a buck .
I wonder if the “fireside” on the south side of grand is still there . I spent a few years trying to replicate the “coppers poppers” from coppers .
Yes the engineering programs are great there.
A few of us were AGR back then
Other that UWyo I’d look at Montana tech , New Mexico tech and if you are a real brainiac … I’m not … Colorado school of mines .

My daughter’s boyfriend is an aspiring EE he graduated this year and engineering programs have a fair amount of stuff competition. If you are going petroleum think of going in as chemistry or geology and transferring after you are in .
I know a few of the hard schools to get in to around us it is easiest to declare an AG major and then transfer mid year . All
The classes are the same to start with anyways
