Low recoil rifle for elk, deer, etc. but .270 or larger caliber

I know it’s hard to find a bolt action rifle in but 6.8 Spc should be terminally effective out 300-350 yards.

Not the same reasons but I wanted to uograde from my old savage model 10 .308. I decided to buy a nicer rifle chambered in .308. It is much nicer to carry and shoot. Now I can keep my Savage in the truck on hunts as a backup, same ammo, not near as worried if something happens to it at the trailhead. Dont mind loaning it to a friend if needed. Can buy ammo anywhere for it.

Sell your junk..

Buy a .223 trainer and 6.5cm stainless Tikkas. When you draw your elk tag you will have an excuse to buy another gun..

Also .270 gets it done on elk, whitetail, what ever else in NA.

Smooth bolt lift and function sounds like Tikka. Pick a cartridge and model and you will be good.

OP's hunting in Kentucky, .270 caliber or larger is required in the regulations.

To answer the question though, I'd go for 7x57 as a first choice with 7.62x39 as another option.

6.8 Western or 270 Win. Both have pretty mild recoil. The 6.8 Western is a step above the 270 win in performance but the 270 is great too.

You can usually find them pretty cheap. As in $100 or under on here.

If you get drawn, spin the 6.5 off and 308 on.

Honestly, I understand the people saying all the things about lower recoil blah ba blah. Get a 270 or 6.8 western. Shoot it. Get a silencer if possible, shoot the hell out of it and then hunt the hell out of it. Then it won’t be a problem. I prefer the 6.8 western of the two but that’s due to a lifelong dislike of shooting and reloading for 270Win

I might have missed if you said this already, but do you currently shoot suppressed? If not, I'd sell the .308 and put it towards a .270 Tikka that is threaded, and buy a suppressor. I would bet shooting a suppressed .270 will recoil a good amount less than the unsuppressed Axis in 308.

That said, if you can afford to do so, I agree with the idea to get a .30cal suppressor, a better rifle in 6mm or 6.5, and just worry about the .270 when/if you get drawn. Then move the suppressor over to the .270 when needed. Heck, if that tag is rare, sell the .270 after your elk hunt to recoup some funds.

Tough to beat a .270 for what you described. I am not knocking other stuff, but unless you are recoil shy (nothing wrong with it) anything smaller doesn’t buy you anything and the 270 has you covered for your min caliber requirements.

Yeah, a Tikka takeoff is the way to go cheep if you draw a hunt with a minimum. If I ever draw a bison tag I'll need something bigger to meet AK requirements. It will either be an excuse to get a 7 mm prefit or I will get a 30-06 takeoff. Just depends on finances at the time. But, I'm sure not planning my primary hunting rifle around that.

If you don't reload, I'd get a 6.5 creed; if you do reload, I'd get a 1:8 243.

Get a Tikka 6.5 CM, or .308 Win. You can shoot a KY whitetail with any centerfire rifle. The KY Elk caliber restriction is a one time problem.

Quite frankly, a KY Elk draw will be a once every 20 year draw for any one person. It might be a little better with the loyalty draw now, but not by much. If you do any amount of practicing with the 6.5, you could put 7,000-8000 rounds down the barrel of that Tikka and burn it out before drawing KY Elk.

If you draw the KY Elk tag. You'll have options to outfit yourself for that future adventure. Get a Tikka prefit, or .308 Win take-off barrel. Get, or borrow, a barrel vise and action wrench and install a .308 barrel after breaking off your burnt out 6.5 CM barrel. The cost of a brand new takeoff barrel is comparable to stocking up on a few boxes of ammo. People sell take-off barrels every day on eBay, it's not something that will be hard to come by when you need it.

Or you can just get a new .270 or .308 when you drawn a KY Elk tag. It's not a problem that you need to solve today.
