Hey Friends-
I'm in the market for a low power rifle scope for my new to me Savage 99 lever gun chambered in 300 Savage. The realistic range I plan on using it would be well within 300 yards for Whitetail deer (farther for plinking purposes, but not for hunting). I'm thinking that a 1-4x24 would be the way to go, so I'm seeking feedback from you all to see if you have any recommendations. I'd prefer MOA adjustments rather than MIL, and I'd like to keep it under $300 (the closer to $200 the better).

Are there any favorites that I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance for helping a newb-

For that price, I'd be looking for a used Leupold. The 1-4 is kind of a tough area in my opinion. You either get really low end units, really overpriced units, or really high end units.

Great to see some folks still talking shop on some vintage rifles. I would suggest looking at a scope with a little bigger objective especially if hunting is going to be the main use of the rifle. Something like the Weaver K4 (fixed 4 power), the Vortex crossfire 2-7 with 32 mm or the leupold rifleman 2-7 all with 32 mm. The bigger objective will allow a little more light in at those early morning and late evenings as well as foggy or overcast days while keeping. With the larger variable (7x) you will have a little more magnification for plinking and those longer hunting shots when presented with one...In short you will be glad you have it. I have a Savage md 99 in .243 that wears an older Bushnell 3-9x40. I love the ability to see clearly through it but it has never been off of 4x in all the years I have had i, thus the suggestion for the fixed 4x.

Leupold VX2 2-7x33 is an excellent scope as is the same in a VX-1. Get the LR dots with duplex and you can play around at longer ranges too. Weighs about 9 ounces. I’ve got them on a 7-08 and .338 Federal Kimber Montana and like them for hunting. Should be able to get one for your budget. Good luck

I have a vxIII 1.75 x6 on little .257 Roberts ....sweet little handy set up that have worked well together. Almost makes me wish I still rifle hunted.

I've got a VX-2 in 2-7x33 that I've put on top of a Marlin 1895 45-70 and it currently rests on my Tikka T3 in 30-06. At 7x, it's more than enough scope for 300 yards on my Tikka, but it's also light and handly on the Marlin. Dialed down to 2x, it's easy to get on target quickly for fast quick shots in the woods.

Savage 99- nice choice! I agree w the Leupold suggestions. I had a Marlin lever 444 woods gun. I mounted an old Redfield shotgun scope, I think it was 1.5x4 Widefield, with see through rings so I could use open sights. I never used the open sights, would have been better off w just simple glass that came right to my eye when I shouldered the gun. Enjoy your new old 99.

I’ve got a vx6 1-6 with a fire dot duplex I’d be willing to let go of... PM me if interested
