Fortunately that area has quite a bit of hunting traffic, and isn't known for grizzlies. I'll share this with guys I know that frequent the area.

I knew a guy who borrowed a horse , brought him out to Montana from Wisconsin.

Lost horse, saddle, rifle.

Was never found, at least not reported found.

I suspect, since it didn't have mountain experience, it got itself hung up in some nasty stuff and dies.

Had to be a bit uncomfortable making the call to the owner.

Happens more often than folks think. We’ve owned horses our whole lives and the things they do and die over never cease to amaze.

He might be hung up to die in some downfalls, seein's how he was all rigged out and loaded. One spook and a dash thru the timber could do it......
That's for damn sure. I've had a few loose their shit in the middle of the night. They got tangled up in a bunch of stuff.

Years ago while driving some high country backroads, I happened onto a skinny, half starved mule. He looked like he wanted some help but wouldn't let me approach him. No halter or anything. Hope he fared well.
