Looking to upgrade scope

In that case I would look hard at Trijicon. They have been more reliable for me.

They also weigh a shit ton vs the Leupold. They are not really comparable.

I just bought a Trijicon Huron 4-16 x 50 and already have the Leupold @Gobihawk asked about.

The Leupold is light and has a great eye box. The reticle is good. I find it very easy to get on target and like the CDS system. It is about to get moved to my 6ARC Howa Mini. The current scope on that rifle is heavy and makes the rifle feel unbalanced.

The Huron would not work on that compact rifle because it is significantly bigger and heavier than the Leupold despite their similar magnification ranges.

For the type of hunting I do with that rifle (6-10 mile round trip hikes from the truck), the Leupold is going to be perfect.

The Huron is going on a rifle which is already heavy.

@UnckleBob thats fair. I completely wrote off leupold because of the problems I had with multiple scopes, so a weight comparison to that wasnt relevant for me, but I understand its more important to some folks. But if someone was open to the brand it’s true leupolds are usually quite light. Also agree completely that leupy scopes are super nice in a lot of ways. I would dearly love to keep using them, but I had consistent problems with 3 out of my 4 failing to hold zero–after that, its simply not an option for me. Its notable to me that most (all?) scope brands known for durability are a bit heavier though. Thats not ideal for me either, but reliability is a higher priority because I dont want to deal with unreliable scopes again. Id go down in magnification or go with a smaller objective or tube diameter if I had to hit a weight, long before I went with an option I wasnt confident in.
The leupold scope the op mentioned is 20oz. A credo 2.5-15 is probably the closest trijicon model to the vx5 3-15, that’s 23oz. If that 3oz difference is a dealbreaker theres always the huron 3-12 which is a couple oz lighter than the leupy. Or a S&B klassik 3-12 is similar weight to the leupy. There’s options if that 3oz is the end of the world for you. Worth checking out even if someone did end up going with that scope in the end.

I'd rather carry a heavier scope that holds zero and dials accurately 6 miles than a light, suspect Leupold a 100 yards.

There is a reason Leupold scopes are light…..and that’s not a good thing.

Mildly off topic. I tried to mount my Huron today. The eye relief was much better than I expected. (A very good thing).

I couldn't mount the scope because I needed higher rings.

Good luck on mounting your scope. I agree long eye relief is a good thing.

Thank you everyone for your input. I own one Leopold. It's over 25 years old on a 270. Has never lost zero. This is why I looked at Leopold now. Plus, I really like the Wind-Plex. Have shot a lot with mildot. It sounds like things have changed at Leopold. Aother reason is I have over $400 in Cabelas points. Have been retired for a while. At this time Cabelas is the best option to upgrade scope. I will go to Cabelas after Christmas to checkout all their options.

Leupold scopes of 25yrs ago(and older) were the bench mark.....they are far from it now.

And it hurts me to say it, as someone who grew up in Oregon. It was family heritage....
