Hello everyone, I am looking for suggestions on what cartridge to re barrel my 30-06 to. Primarily for deer out to 500 yards even though probabaly won't take that shot. Caveat, no 6.5 Creedmoor ease.
Thank you

Had this same question in my head. Was thinking 25-06 or 280 with a hand loader in the family who has and uses both a lot. He’s a good shooter and says deer don’t run when hit with the 25. NE whitetail and coyotes. Not overly big deer but he doesn’t shoot any small ones.

Then everything got scarce and I bailed.

Did find some factory Nosler BT 25-06 and grabbed 100 so I’d at least have the brass If I didn’t love the BTs. Guess 25-06 when I get the itch again.

Pick a bullet before you pick the cartridge. 6.5-06, 280AI, and 338-06 are all interesting to me, but I'd want to have a couple loads planned out and some numbers run in a ballistics calculator before I picked the cartridge.

25/06 was my first gun, but it's not a great choice today. Quality brass is nonexistent, and 25 cal bullet options are lousy.

6.5×284 is a decent choice, when you can find brass it is high quality, and 6.5 has great bullet options with good availability.

6 creed would do awesome for you too.

THIS.

I would highly suggest NOT building your platform around any product from Nosler. I made that mistake about 5 years ago with a 7mag. Accubonds are a good bullet but Nosler seems incapable of supplying the reloading market. They prioritize loaded ammo.

30-06 sometimes old school is the best school, especially now of days with the shortages of loading components and the newer factory loadings that are out there. You will never in my opinion have a difficult time finding 30-06 ammo or loading components.

Nosler doesn't make enough loaded ammunition to eat up their bullet making capacity. But I don't disagree with you that they have been horrible at supplying components for a component company. In no way shape or form are they an ammunition manufacturer over a component bullet company.

I was suggesting that they prioritize selling their components to ammunition manufacturers over the reloading market. Is that not the case? If not, then I don’t know how they are even a viable business. They seem outright incompetent at keeping anything of value in stock.
