So im fairly new to rifles and am looking to get one setup. For reference im going to be getting a tikka 308 and will be using it from everything from treestand hunting at 40-100 yards and timber areas with clearcuts that could open up longer shots out to my max comftrable range, which i will find out by practicing alot this year, so lets just say 300-400 and in. I would assume second focal plane would be best and havent decided on an exact power yet. I was looking at alot of the drop testing and cant decide. I just want a good rock solid reliable hunting scope that is good in low light conditions. Any reccomendations would be appretiated, Im not partial to any brand so lets hear it. I should also say i have a budget of anywhere from 700-1200.

SWFA 3-9 with UM tikka rings would be the easy choice and on the lower end of your budget. 3-15 if you want a bit more power. They are first focal plane but reticles are bold enough to be functional at lower power for close shots. With your expected range get a mil/mil scope and use quick drop or reticle for your longer shots. If you want second focal plane, Trijicon Credo 3-9x40 in mils with same rings.

I would go with a trijicon credo. I think they have some with capped turrets which I would prefer unless they have a zero stop and you're going to be dialing alot.

I discussed this with some of our various tech reps, here is what they had to say:

"For this - I would recommend the Telson ARC. 2.5x to 15x is perfect for the ranges he advised. Additionally, the scope has the auto wake function on the reticle in it (one of a kind - no other company offers this in their line). The scope is beyond rock solid and for SFP is an amazing scope.
If he decides he wants FFP, the Telson Toxin would be the way to go."

"I would say for now to hold off till the new Athlon Ares HLR hits the shore. It will be perfect for his budget and give him a ton of options for the money.
Stay with second focal plane for all the more he his using the rifle for and the capabilities of the rifle and presumably hunting ammo. The Athlon Ares HLR will give him locking turrets if he gets a little more comfortable with ballistics and wants to dial. It also has a zero stop in it as well to eliminate the fear of dialing past zero if he does dial."

"I really feel the Element Helix Gen 2 SFP is the right scope. I recommend that scope because it is SFP like he is already suggesting, it punches well above it's price tag as it tracks with less than 1% error which is unheard of for the price tag, also has Schott glass, another point of punches above the price tag. He would be hard pressed to find another optic ESPECIALLY for an SFP that will beat the helix gen 2 even if his budget is tops out at 1200 bucks."

"GPO Centuri 3-18x50 - enough magnification to get at least 300-400 , the 50 mm obj aids in low light since hunting in timber, illum reticle regardless of MOAi or G4i, free Kenton Turret available which is a $115 value. Great optical quality , weight and length excellent for an 18x scope"

"Sightron S-TAC 4-20x50 - MOA 2
It's a little more robust then the SIII's, it's great for hunting and has the 50mm objective for low light. It can go up to and beyond 400 yards if the customer decides to shoot a longer distance. It's second focal plane and the customers price will be on the lower end of their budget."

"I would say a Leupold VX-3HD 3.5-10x40 CDS-ZL - Duplex. Light weight, CDS for longer shots if needed, good eye relief, rugged (punisher test), lifetime guarantee, elite optical system so great resolution, light transmission and glare reduction"

Our pleasure to discuss these, or other options with you
