I am currently looking for a new hunting scope that fits the mold of a SFP 2-10x44 or 2-12x40, something in that range. The main thing I'm looking for is clear glass and simple illuminated reticle.

I am currently looking at the Vortex Viper HD 2-10x42 and the element helix HD compact 2-12x42.

Kinda looking for the best value around that price range. Would love any suggestions or input on those.

SFP is a hard one and is really limiting, but If rugged reliability and zero retention matter at all to you, this is what I would do given your outlined criteria. I wouldn’t trust a viper, and have never even heard of your other option.

Zero retention matters. Period.

I appreciate the input. I currently have a 3x9x40 accupoint on my rifle.(which is a 7mm rem mag x bolt) It is a great scope I just find the glass to not be as good as I thought it would have been and want something with a better FOV. Most ranges I'll he hunting will be from like 20-150 yards. Thick bushy places up here in Ontario.

Element, Athlon & GPO offer excellent options. As a long standing supporting vendor here it's always our pleasure to assist the members here. Please feel free to give us a call, 516-217-1000, so we can assist you personally with different available options and special opportunities .

Trijicon credo 3-9 x40 would be a good option that’s in a similar price range. I believe it was put through the scope evaluation as well.
Different price point, but I run the 2.5-15x42 credo hx and have been happy with it.

You may need to find a used one to fit budget but the nightforce nxs 2.5-10 ×42 is the answer.
Money isnt and issue, but I just find it hard to justify the price different when its literally going to be used for close range white tail hunting. Especially being in canada. The mark up is insane right now.

I'm looking for the same thing for a muzzeloader whitetail in new england. Doesn't seem to be a ton of options in mid priced scope. At the moment I'm debating between the Huron 1-6 or 2.5-10. Wish someone would make a solid1.5-6X with a decent sized bell to gather light that was somewhere between china cheap or 1K+

I'm in Canada to and have to deal with the same bs, definitely not ideal.
Saying that the nxs is 100% worth it over the options you listed. The trijicons would be the best cheaper option since we cant easily get swfa in Canada. The options you listed may be fine to look through but they will more than likley cause you trouble with reliability and have low resale when you eventually decide to upgrade to a quality scope. Just my experience for what its worth

Does the price make a difference if one is demonstrably superior in zero retention and durability than the others (in this case, Nightforce vs Vortex)?

In Canada as well. I can definitely understand the frustration of lack of options and pricing.
An shv 3-10x42 might be another option. They’re around that$1300 range currently. Would put it in between the viper and credo hx range.
No personal experience with the viper hd, but I ran a viper hs 4-16 on my 7mag for a lot of years up until last year. It was a decent scope until it wasn’t. Lol. The vibration from riding in the sxs box did it in. I still have a few other vortex’s, but I’m kind of gun shy to run one on my main rifle now.

The nightforce is 2499.99 plus tax here which is kinds wild. While the Vortex is 949.99
Athlon Argos 2-12 with the AHMC reticle may be worth a look.

Either @gr8fuldoug or @EuroOptic would be where I would purchase from.
That athlon Argos actually looks perfect, and the price is decent as well, how is the glass quality on that?

Or honestly even the Midas hmr HD looks nice aswell, but its 2.5-15x50, may be a little big/heavy for what i need
