Looking for feedback and suggestions on a new rifle set up.

I am looking into a new rifle that would be specifically for deer size game with shooting distances at or under 250 yards and something that I can suppress and make pretty quiet as I may get an opportunity to do some suburbia style deer hunting.

For the rifle what I’m looking at is a Howa Mini Action Carbon Stalker in 6.5 Grendel, for the scope a Trijicon AccuPoint 1x4 (not sure which reticle) and a TBAC Ultra 5 suppressor.

So what I’m looking for is something pretty lightweight and the ability to have a pretty quiet shot report and a scope that would be a decent low light hunting scope.

This is where I’m at, but I’m certainly not 100% decided. I thought I would plug into the Rokslide collective, collaborative high functioning brain power, and get some thoughts on this set up and suggestions on other rifles, scopes, and or suppressors.

If you would like a quiet shot report... stay well away from an Ultra 5!

What made that suppressor attractive honestly, was the size and weight. What recommendation would you have for the set up that I am looking at?

Hey Ken, I did think about that. I think I’ve actually got the 2 1/2 x 8 that I could put on my set up but it’s not with an illuminated reticle. It would be a little bit of a weight penalty, but Trijicon does have a 1x8 that might work.

The ultra 5 is notoriously loud. There's other suppressors that are the same size or even smaller now that suppress better.

Hey Ken, I did think about that. I think I’ve actually got the 2 1/2 x 8 that I could put on my set up but it’s not with an illuminated reticle. It would be a little bit of a weight penalty, but Trijicon does have a 1x8 that might work.

Id probably end up talking myself into a 13 ounce Accupoint 3-9x40 with amber center dot. I like the amber better than red or green.

My problem with suburban rifle hunting is that there are very few safe shot angles and you need a guaranteed bang flop. Tracking deer through suburban yards is a horrible experience (I had to do it for a deer I shot with a crossbow). Even a good clean hit in the lungs isn’t guaranteed to put one down right there.

If I were doing it, however, I would pick a rifle that was an absolute laser to 100 yards, pick my spots very carefully, and take headshots. My CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel with Trijicon 3-9x and an Airlock ZG 6.5 or Unknown Suppressors OG 6.5 would be just about perfect. It also happens to be for sale…

The Airlock ZG 6.5 or Unknown Suppressors OG 6.5 would be superior in all respects to your chosen Ultra 5.

If you are willing to go for 6” muzzle forward, then you open up a plethora of options that are even quieter. Options include the Unknown Suppressors Reaper, AB Raptor 8, Nomad Ti XC, etc.

To address some of the concerns with the “suburban“ deer hunting I have in mind, the area I’m thinking of I would have basically unfettered access to around 24 acres and the neighbors on each side of the property I would hunt would allow me to go onto their property to retrieve a deer if need be. So perhaps it wouldn’t be suburban by most folks definition, but it is certainly not out in the typical larger wooded areas that I would usually hunt, thus the need for something that would be quieter. And of course you have to keep in mind shot angles,and your back stop-which really you have to take into consideration pretty much anywhere you are anyway.

Even if I don’t hunt this suburban area I would still like to get this set up just to have something different. The places that I typically hunt deer don’t require shots of over 150 yards usually and likely at least 50% of them are under 100 yards.

The supressor part is the variable that I really don’t know much about. It seems like that technology is changing at light speed and smaller and lighter suppressor are coming out that would likely fit the bill.

If you already have the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9x, that’s a great choice.

I would probably pick a SWFA 10x for your purposes. I use it for squirrel hunting, which demands a similar level of precise shot placement. I’ve also use it for woods hunting whitetails from zero to 300 yards.

Climb trees 200 yards from the creek. Plant food plot on near side of creek. You are then shooting downhill into a berm 90% of the time. 300wsm w 150 gr NBT and 45-70 w 325 gr Hornady Superevolution do alot of bang/floppin. I recently bought 23 acres with subdivision on 3 sides. I've hunted it over 10 years. 21 acres of the 23 are in a floodplain. 250 unused acres owned by the county that doesn't get hunted on the 4th side.

I love to rattle windows about 50 minutes before sunup. Thats usually first decent shooting light.

I agree more than 4x is useful. the 3-9 Accupoint would be a nice choice. I would concentrate on mid to high shoulder shots. Its a big target and will give DRTs very consistently.

More suppression. Especially if you are going to be around peoples homes.
The ultra5 is not a quiet can.
