Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone had any pointers/recommendations for 49 archery elk. I've been in the unit a few times but not for elk. Not looking for honey holes, just some advice. Thanks for your time!

The whole "not looking for honey holes just looking for advice." tag line gets used SO much here. Never been there, my advice is to use what knowledge you have of elk and that unit and get after it with a 2 day scouting trip.

Well I apologize for using a term that gets "used SO much" on this site. I was just wanting to see if anyone had this hunt in the past and wanted to pass along any pointers/recommendations to help a fellow hunter out. Plus it's a draw unit that now takes 3-4 points to draw so it's not like your typical OTC hunt.

I do appreciate your advice and plan on making multiple scouting trips starting next weekend. Thanks a bunch!

Just got back from a quick 3 day trip in Buffalo Peaks Wilderness. Easy access. Plenty of elk. Great Beaver pond fishing. Have fun in there next weekend!

Don't get too confident in the numbers you see scouting. There will be hundreds of them up high, but come rut, they disperse and are much harder to find. Cover ground, lots of it, until you find them.

Not quite sure why he even responded to your post. I hunted it last year as well and was struggling until bbrown helped me out. I'm sure he will help you out. If you have any more questions P.M me as well. I saw a lot of elk during the archery season while I was scouting for the 1st rifle season last year. Definitely check out the buffalo peaks if you can set up a spike camp. A couple of big bulls came out of there last year.

Our motto in my deer club was that you should be just as concerned about your fellow hunters success as you are your own. It made for an enjoyable club most of the time. Some people feel the need to impose their extreme diy view on others and seem to have a sense of personal superiority and authority. Personally I like helping other hunters and have recieved helpful information and more and I'm grateful.

Nick , did you really have to stomp on the mans thread and tell him to basically to shut up and do it all yourself because thats the way you think he should do it ?

@InGodWeTrust - bbrown and I have been trading PM's and he has given me a few areas to look at as we'll as confirm a few others that I had in mind. Thank you for your response.

@Dave - This is the same way I feel, I know I don't post a whole lot, but I read posts almost daily. If I see a post asking for opinions or recommendations and I know the area or the subject matter, I never hesitate to send a PM and share the experience I had or my opinion.

Thanks to those of you who have replied and given recommendations. I've done plenty of research on this unit and grew up less than hour away but like I said I really never hunted it for elk. It's always nice to hear other people's opinions.

I know next year a post like mine will come up on this forum or a different one asking for help on this unit, I will be more than happy to share my experience after this years hunt.

Thanks guys!

I've been told the same thing by a friend who lives in CO Springs and knows the unit like the back of his hand.

Trophyhill, is your friends name Greg? If so, he is a mutual friend, and a hell of a great guy.
