What is the best optic for a budget around 700-1000 for a hunting optic or and magnification for a 7mm prc. Looking at Vortex Athlon and Burris. Any input much appreciated

What ranges do you anticipate shooting? I just picked up a barely used Sig Tango DMR 3-18 for my B14 in 7prc for $700, asked a lot of questions and it seemed like 18x is more than sufficient out to 1000 yards. My range is opening up the members-only 1000 yard range to the public so I’m looking forward to stretching out past 300

Idk man I never have hunted long range or shot long range it’s all new to me. I grew up shooting my ol pride and true model 700 .270 so I’m excited to find out. I been doing a lot of research but I have for one never shot a ffp optic. Only sfp with mid range magnification. I have literally shot all my bucks here in Northern California all within 200 yards 😂

I ahot to 900 last weekend with a 16x scope and that was plenty of power. I also shot to 600 with a 10x and would have shot further but I didn’t have done for that rifle past 600

All that said, I don’t ever find myself with my scope below 6x. I’m your price range I’d be looking at a Zeiss V6 in 4-16 or 6-24

The Sig Tango DMR is a solid pick for 7mm PRC - good glass clarity for the price, and 3-18x is plenty for ethical hunting shots at 1000yd. How’s the reticle illumination holding up on yours? I’ve heard some users mention it’s a bit dim in bright sunlight.

Take a look around in the Optics Forum here on Rokslide.

Lots of good information there.

The only thing I will say is this: Glass quality doesn't mean squat if the scope doesn't do what it is supposed to do. For long range shooting that means dialing reliably and returning to zero.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I do recommend used vs new. You can get twice the scope used for the same $. Vortex has lifetime no question asked, no receipts required warranty. Buy used with peace of mind.

Haven’t gotten out with it yet, but so far really happy with it. Very light for a 34mm tube, clicks feel good and I like the turret lock. Illum seems fine in my very scientific backyard test. For $700 I think I got a great deal.

SWFA 3-9 is all you need. A bargain at $600. If you REALLY think you need more magnification for the ranges you’ll hunt with it (you really don’t), SWFA 3-15 for $750 or Maven 1.2 3-15 for $1200.

I have the new viper hd 3x15x44 but wasn’t sure it that be enough for mid range/long range it’s the VMR 3 reticle in moa sfp

I don’t ever shoot my 7prc past 11x and 1350 yards. Think every thing I killed this year with it was 9-11x

I’d take 12x max to save ounces if it’s was an option

Most scopes optically seem to be the best in the middle of power index not top

You need to educate yourself enough to make a couple decisions. First focal versus second focal is a huge one in hunting scopes. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Do you ever see yourself hunting in timber/etc where you will need a really low power like 2x or 3x or is this only going to be open country where 6X on the low end would be fine?
Vortex Razor LHT 3-15 mil/mil is a great choice IMO.

It's not that if it's enough, it's if it will put the bullet where you are aiming. The Maven is a scope that works as a scope should (I have 1). The reason one of the first things people bring up with Vortex scopes is the warranty, is that many many people have to use it.

Follow the advice above, and look into the scope evaluations on here. No sense packing around a scope that will disappoint you. All the work has been done, just pick a scope that passes, they start at about $350.

As far as long range hunting goes, getting a scope that works is just the bare minimum for entry.
It requires a skill set that no one is born with. So some instruction and a lot of time shooting is necessary in order to be successful.
1000 yards was mentioned in this thread. That would be a very low percentage shot for a novice. For reference on my ballistic chart for a very flat shooting rifle I have, the bullet drops 52" @ 500 yards and 245" @ 1000 yards- so 16 feet more drop. That is just one part of the equation.

If you are dedicated to shooting long range, and put in the work, you can be successful. Lots of help available for you on Rokslide. Good luck

I put the Tango DMR 3-18 on my Cross Sawtooth 7PRC recently and have been really impressed with it. First Sig scope i've ever had and i'm a fan.

Keep the Viper and just run it for now. I'll 2nd the SWFA 3-9 for any and all hunting, but you've got a nice optic already. If you're worried about ruggedness, just take it out on the rifle and drop it and see what happens. If it takes a crap, send it in and then sell what comes back to fund a different scope. 90% of hunters have too much magnification for the job. I run into guys at the public range now that have 4-12 and 4-16 scopes on Marlin 30/30's.

I'd honestly probably run a 1-8 LVPO hunting if someone would put one out with a larger objective like 32mm-40mm, for a decent price, but right now, LVPO's with 20mm lenses weigh as much or more than the SWFA 3-9. I'll just run the SWFA at that weight class.
