My FIL gave me a Patriot 6.5CM that he got but never used. The plan is to let it be my son's first rifle. It has a crappy winchester scope on it(im guessing less than $100). I want to put a bit better glass on it.

I have a VX-freedom 4-12x40 CDS on my Tikka that I really like but its now $450 which is $100 more than when I bought mine.

I would have bought another if they were still $350 but I dont think they are worth the increase.

What alternatives would you consider? This will be an eastern deer rifle so I'm looking in the 3-9x40 to 4-12x40 range, lightweight, and $350 or under.

Im seeing Burris, Athlon, Vortex, have comparable models, similar weight, and decent to solid reputations. Any others?

Although I am a huge SWFA fan, and a fixed 6x would work great, in your price range, for what you want to use it for, it would be really, really hard to beat a 3x9 Burris Fullfield. They’re durable and perfect eastern whitetail scopes in the ~$200 range. You could probably find a used one in the classifieds here for under $150. I have three of them on various rifles and they are my no brainer, go to scopes for what you’re looking for. Durable, good optics, reliable and reasonably priced.

The Sightron suggestion above is a good one. The Bushnell Engage 3-9x40 is a non tacticool version with a basic plex reticle. There are versions that have that though.

Honestly, it depends on whether you want a duplex reticle or a BDC reticle. Burris 3-9 Droptine or Fullfield, whichever one floats your boat. It's really tough to beat a Droptine for $130. The Sightron S1 is a similar scope. New Vortex Diamondbacks are priced higher, but you can find used ones cheaper.
