long range 300win round

Under 1 MOA out of a factory rifle and and shooting factory ammo? If you want the factory ammo route looks like you got a nice combo going. I would stick with the Precision Hunter 200 grain... Is your rifle brand new? Get 200 rounds through it and I bet the group tightens even more!!

Give the Precision Hunter more time... I recently purchased an XBolt in 6.5 Creedmoor for a sheep hunt. I normally reload but wanted to go the factory route for this rig to start. I've been using the Precision Hunter 143 ELDX... Initial groups were about MOA, maybe a hair more. 300 shots later and I have .75ish all day long. I've been pinging steel out to 850 very consistently.. Pretty happy with the setup.

Anyone had luck with the Berger 215 on a Sako with 11 twist or is a 180gr about maxed out?

The berger 215 ammo is longer than SAAMI specs and is over 3.5" if I recall correctly. I'm not familiar with Sako magazine length but that would be a problem if it isn't better than tikkas.

You're probably pushing it in regards to twist rate but I wouldn't hesitate to try hornady precision hunter 200 gr.

For those wondering the Berger 215 factory ammo is 3.6” coal, atleast the case I got of it is.

Shoots great for me, but I haven’t been able to do much with it yet.

Tried the 215g's in my buddies Sako..2-3 inch groups.... it would not stabilize them... and we are at 5600 foot of elevation...Tried the 190's and his rifle really liked them..1/2 inch or better groups....

My Sako really likes the Nosler 190gr ABLR, and it has taken elk for me out to just shy of 600 yds. It consistently punches .75 MOA at 250 yds.

My 300 (custom build) shoots 180gr Nosler AB factory loads .6 MOA. Just took an elk at 450 with that load. Kept a lot of it's weight.

Dont even think twice about a 215 Bergers terminal performance. Its the killingest bullet I have ever seen and we have taken dozen and dozens of elk from 100 yards to 1200 with them.

Would you recommend using the 215 gr on 300 WSM as a Long range option?

I run the 215 in my 300WSM. I also tried them in my 11 twist Brux 300WM and while they shot well on initial testing, I chickened out and went with the 210 hunting VLD.

Chris
When you say chickened out.. are we reaching the ammos max capability and safety?

Kris

No, I didn't want to risk a hunt on marginal stabilization of the 215 even though I was above 11.5k feet most of the time. I live at 850' and can only get out to 600 yards on my range so i didn't know how the 215 would act beyond that.

Chris

Your Howa has a 1:10 twist rate.

Be prepared to spend some money, and time, to see which round your rifle likes the most. I do recommend thoroughly cleaning your rifle (including copper) before testing each brand of ammo.

Here are some additional commercial ammunition to take a look at (in no particular order):
  1. Berger Match Grade 215 grain Hybrid (note: this may not stabilize fully in your rifle)
  2. Nosler Trophy Grade Accubond Long Range 190 grain
  3. Federal Premium 185 grain Berger Hybrid
  4. Barnes Vor-Tx LR 190 grain
  5. HSM 185 grain
  6. Winchester Expedition 190 grain Accubond Long Range

im not broz but it depends how long you can load it. If you’re limited to 2.86 coal it doesn’t make much sense. If you have a magazine that allows over 3” COAL they make a lot of sense.
