What has you leaning towards Kodiak if you bring your wife and daughter?
Nothing boring about chasing Sitka’s. I agree the bucks I’ve seen are gorgeous. If this trip goes well I think we’ll go back in August and chase velvet bucks in the alpine.
More deer, I would expect POW a lot more of a grind, and even harder to have consistent encounters with 3 people. Kodiak has more hunting catered trips and the likelihood of deer encounters are higher since there are more deer and you can glass them up and plan a stalk.
My plan for pow is to stay at a lodge, and rent a pickup and go start grinding it out blind, and I don’t think the girls would enjoy that kind of hunting catered trips, especially in typical late Oct/mid November weather
When I was younger I spent 13 months based out of Craig, but we spent most of our time anchored up on the west side of Dall, and the guy who unloaded our boat hunted and I tagged along a few hunts and it just doesn’t seem like a hunt my wife and daughter would enjoy, and they don’t have the very particular goal that I have… besides the weather and terrain, I do think they would like Kodiak
The alpine hunting is interesting to me, it looks like a ton of fun and absolutely gorgeous country, but I can’t stand the thought of killing those deer in velvet and summer coats, knowing how much cooler they are in a few months. I would like to tag along on a hunt like that, but I’m not a velvet guy, but I assume the beautiful country probably makes up for the plain deer, but when I go up there, it will be to collect a specimen of the prettiest deer in the world
Doesn’t have to be a giant, I just want it to be a good representation. I can’t believe I didn’t hunt the year I was up there, but I got sidetracked by working every day and a good looking girl, but now I get to go back up there just to hunt, so I guess it works out
