“Neither a borrower nor a lender be; / For loan oft loses both itself and friend.” The Bard.
I lent a rifle to a guy from work. It came back with a deep 3" gouge on the bottom of the fore end of the stock. I asked what happened, and he said he rested it on a rock to shoot his elk. No offer to fix, replace, or even any "oops sorry".
I have a synthetic stocked cheap Savage that now is the loaner rifle. I got it on part of a trade and don't care if it is used to paddle a boat or shovel a latrine. Being in Colorado now though, even a loan of a rifle has to go through an FFL, so it's basically a non-issue.
The better half lent her boat to her brother and dad. It came back with a busted lower unit, ladder, and was cocked so badly onto the trailer that I had to take it back to the lake to make it road safe to pull. She said "but they are family", to which I replied, "they are family with no boat that just cost you about 3 grand.
I have come to subscribe to the adage that if you lend a person money and you never see them again, it was worth it. I don't lend anything I can't afford to lose.
