Looking for help with loads for my new muzzleloader. No data on the Blackhorn site for .45 cal. I'm hearing 100 gr. by volume is a good starting point. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance...

- CVA Accura V2LR - .45 cal
- BH209 Powder
- CCI 209 Primer
- Powerbelt ELR 280 grain

I have a 50 cal and use BH209 and CCI209 primers. I weigh 70 gr which is probability close to 100 gr by volume. You have to be careful as I have found the small plastic vials with the orange caps to be non uniform with their markings. I never shot powerboats. My gun likes the Barnes 290 TEZ. I found them extremely accurate and deadly.

My Knight UL works well with 115gr by volume with W209 primers and Lehigh .458 260gr Muzzleloader bullets. Start at 100gr by volume and go up or down from there.

I load 120 gr. by vol. the bullets shoots really well

I didn't shoot this a fellow ML user did. I wish I was a good a shot as he is.

Thanks guys!

Anybody shooting the ELR 280s?

Man, I just tried out the ELR 280s this morning... was mostly shooting my rifle but brought along my new CVA Accura to try out with BH209. Looks like I've got pretty much the same setup as you, primers and all.

Only two groups of 3, one around 84 g by weight and another at 76 g by weight. Both groups were unimpressive. I need to get back out for a longer session with just the smoke pole and get dialed in before December. Let me know if you've made it to the range yet because I think we've got the same rifle.

I have the exact same rifle/powder/bullets & primers as you. I am finally hoping to get out and shoot it for the first time tomorrow. If we have any success I will let you know what we come up with.

I am still a little unclear as to the max load of this rifle. My owners manual says 150 grains by volume BP substitute which typically translates to 120 grains by volume for Blackhorn 209 or 84 grains by weight. However, someone on this forum with the newer Accura X-treme .45 cal mentioned he was shooting a 77 grain by weight max load per his owners manual. I reached out to CVA and they were quick to get back with me and said 77 grains was the max load I should using for Blackhorn. This limit is nowhere in my manual and I don't see how you can arrive at 77 grains based on max limit of 150 grains by weight for other BP substitutes

CVA really needs to get their info straight and conveyed properly to their customers. I am sure there is enough of a safety factor where 84 grains is not going to cause a problem, but the reality is Blackhorn 209 is an extremely popular substitute so having the appropriate load limits should be in their literature/owners manual. They obviously recognize the popularity of this powder to sell a breachplug made for BH209. Even their staff have posted on boards or FB showing their loads as exceeding this 77 grain limit for this exact same rifle and load setup. So there is a disconnect somewhere.

Just received my MR-X

Per the manual
50 cal Blackhorn 209 - Max 120 grain Volume/ 84 grain Weight, Min 50 grain Volume/ 35 grain weight

45 Cal Blackhorn 209 - Max 110 grain Volume/ 77 grain Weight, Min 50 grain Volume/35 grain weight

50 Cal 777 or Pyrodex - Max 150 grain Volume, Min 50 grain Volume

45 Cal 777 or Pyrodex - Min 50 grain Volume, there is no Max listed but manual does say recommend only Blackhorn 209 for 45 Cal.

My 45 Cal MR-X has breech plug for 209 while (per mnaual) 50 Cal comes with breech plugs for both 209 and black powder substitue.

OK, so today we got out for the very first time to shoot our new Accura V2
LR 45. Cal muzzleloaders. My son and I bought identical guns for an upcoming hunt next month. It took a while but we were finally able to procure Blackhorn 209 and CCI209A primers with just few weeks to spare.

Unfortunately, we ran short on time today and the wind was picking up so we were not able to fine tune our loads but I feel like we got close. We were shooting at 100 yards but were able to get on paper and decent groups from never fired guns in just 13 rounds total (6 for my son and 7 on my gun). My gun is shooting a little lower than I want as I need to be about 5 1/2 inches high at 100 the be DC at 200 (mine is the lower left group, my son's is the upper right). This was all done using 77 grains by weight BH209 and PB 45 ELR's. We are happy with this load and surprised it worked out well without experimenting with other various options I had previously weighed out.

Unfortunately, my chrono was acting up so we never got good FPS values that we had hoped. I have not been able to find any data for the .45 cal 280 grain ELR using 77 grains, however. Using all the data that was available I extrapolated from what figures were available and factoring in for the 30" barrel length. My best guess this load is coming our at 1885 fps (definitely give or/take). I worked up my dope chart using this number. Next week I will be able to shoot at 200 yards so it will be interesting to see if I am close or way off.

Long answer to your question but I would start at 77 grains and work back from there if needed.

The 45 guns have a little faster twist. I would start with a 78.5, 80,82 and 84 grains by weight. I would choose a bullet between 250 and 275. If you choose to size bullets make sure you use a wad on top of the powder. Hope this helps and good luck this season.
