I want a pair of lightweight socks and a pair of heavyweight socks, and would like some opinions..

For the lightweight sock, I'm thinking a boot length is adequate, and I've been eyeing the Farm 2 Feet Elkin Valley. Anyone have experience with that one? Any idea on the difference between it and the Damascus?

For a heavyweight sock, I am thinking I want an over-the-calf so that if I wear boot top merino bottoms, there is enough overlap so the bottoms don't ride up and come out of the sock. I've been looking at the Farm 2 Feet Hickory and the Darn Tough Hunter Extra Cushion.

Anyone have any experience with those particular socks?

I haven't tried the Elkin valley however the look like a lower version or the ELY which also comes in light weight, ELY are my favorite full length sock, I have it in both light and medium weight. I have several pairs of the boulder in both light and mid weight and the have worked great with lower hiking style boots.
I cant comment on the FTF heavy weights as I have some Filson Heavy weights that been filling that role and I haven't been able to kill them.

Thanks Trail.. Do you like full length socks for your lightweight socks? I just figured if I'm wearing a lightweight sock, its because its warmer out, and then I wouldn't want a full length sock.

I hadn't looked at the Ely much for that reason, but after looking at it a little now, I kinda like it and will definitely add it to my list!

I really dont have a preference as long as the sock is higher then my boot. So weight matters more to then hight as long as they are tall enough.
For perspective the Weight difference of the Ely light to medium is a little over 1oz ...so about 25percent of the total.

The liner should be the same length or longer than the oversock. IMO. Darn Tpugh mounteaineerring makes a great heavy over the calf sock and smartwool phd mountaineering over the calf is a lighter sock but not a liner.

I have those DT hunter extra cushions and they really aren't that heavy. For my heavy socks I use Smart Wool.
I wear some boot top Kuiu Merinos and sock type hasn't been a thought in the least.

Good to know. Thanks for that info!

I have the First Lite boot top merino bottoms and a pair of Darn Tough Hunter Crew socks, and there is only about 1" of overlap and the bottoms will come out of the sock on occasion and drives me nuts. Id rather have a sock that overlaps several inches.

My liner socks are over-the-calf, then my merino bottoms go over those, and then my Smartwool Classics go over the bottoms. The Classics are lightweight that go to the calf or a little higher but not completely over, and I also have some heavyweight wool socks for winter that work the same way but are longer.
