Whatever benefits themselves, as always. Get their cake and eat it too.

Do you really think that Nike, Apple, Amazon, Walmart and co are going to just absorb costs and take their tax breaks and give it back to the common man in one form or the other?

So the shareholders will benefit, yes? That's us dude! As always, if you don't like it don't buy it!

Here's what I think is going to happen long term, with some room around the margins.

1) These tariffs will be used as leverage to negotiate lower tariffs on American goods exported to other countries. That will increase trade it the long run, increase domestic production.

2) Corporate tax cuts will lead to either higher returns for shareholders (good), or more risk taking such as innovation and investment (also good).

It's a short term pain for long term pain thing.

There is no reason why countries should tariff our goods more than we tariff theirs, understanding it gets kind of muddy once subsidies are considered.

China should be slowly choked to death. I think there is a very good chance of military conflict with China soon, meaning we won't have access to their goods then anyway. We need to do what we can to re-shore or near-shore that production base now (and when I say now, I mean like RIGHT NOW).

I think this has been covered in other threads, but it's about to get REAL interesting learning which "American-made" outdoor products have a global supply chain, and will pass on price increases because of their components.

Tide's gone out...we're about to see who's been swimming naked.
My overseas purchases of outdoor products are generally direct, so uncertain whether supply chain will be significant in my individual case. For example, the Vorn EV45 made in Norway is easily the best hunting backpack I've ever had, and that was a direct purchase from Europe (not even sure you can get them stateside). Pretty much done buying outdoor equipment for now so not worried, but of course that may change in the future.

The most powerful leader in the free world, his best and smartest financial minds, giving a tariff presentation effecting the economies of every country of any size after preparing since well before the election, leaves out Russia for some reason, and not a single person on the team questions why a group of uninhabited islands is included. The wife thought it was a spoof from The Onion, but it’s really how incompetent our country is being run. The reality tv and Fox News personalities running the country are finding out actually managing things is harder than just talking about it. Unsecure group chats with a dozen people at the highest level who should all know better, or they are stupid or don’t care. We paid a foreign country to imprison an innocent guy without any due process as a check to prevent it. Doge is a cluster from day one. 40% of the population is still convinced a tanking economy and higher prices with higher taxes for us, and lower taxes for oligarchs is a normal part of any change in policy.

Yep, we really do have tariffs on penguins. Rather than playing checkers or chess, we are deep in a game of Candy Land. Quite honestly it’s going about how I figured it would.

You do realize that was explained? Not just Russia, but Iran and North Korea were likwise left off the list for the obvious reason that -- drumroll please -- we're not trading with them since we're already sanctioning the hell out of them.

Fyi: tariffs on empty islands are so neighboring countries can't say they are shipping from there to avoid tariffs
Right . . .
Because nobody is smart enough to know if Heard or McDonald Islands are real shipping points or not? Every idiotic potential shipping destination should be included?

We imported three billion dollars of stuff from Russia last year, but you already knew that, right?

I got to watch with my own eyes the slow death of the timber industry in Northwest Montana (and I'm sure far beyond). The Canadian timber industry was heavily subsidized, the American industry not. Mill after mill shutting down because they couldn't compete with cheaper Canadian lumber. It was sad to see and no one lifted a finger to prevent it.

Sadly I think it would take a long time to recover even a little :(

I could go on about tariff history and how bad the average American worker had it in the late 1800s - the greatest time of all time the big guy likes to talk about.

Totally agree on this piece.

Your other points are fair in theory but agree to disagree that our overlords will do that all in good faith vs pocket themselves. We've seen it time and time again 2008-09, COVID etc.

I just want a plan how you would fix the problem created the last 60 years. I know every thing they are doing now is bad you have made that clear. How would you propose going about righting the ship?
I'm not an economist, I'm a hillbilly in ND.

But I know enough that Tariffs have never worked historically and are paid by the consumer. A ton of Americans are struggling and this will make it worse, will we bend or break?

Remains to be seen if they will become a short-term bargaining tool and be relaxed or stick around indefinitely.

Hey, there were a few insanely wealthy people!

They were affectionately called robber barons by the people they were paying about enough to survive just long enough to die young.

Currently, I assume the administration has a good plan that will benefit Americans, and if the Tariffs have a negative impact, then they will pivot and reevaluate.

What else can we do? Make an emotional reaction based on some ideas we have no idea about? Speculate worst case like it’s reality? I don’t think anyone understands the strategy with the tariffs yet, and I trust that they are way smarter than me.

I don’t carry the weight of the country on my shoulders, and never have, so my caveman instincts about how the tariffs will affect the country are probably not extremely accurate, especially considering we don’t even know what these tariffs will look like big picture

So many people seem so matter of fact on what the tariffs mean for us, with very little information and NO clear information yet. It seems a little premature to go into panic mode

Is it possible to Double LIKE a post?

I still haven't seen an answer from any of the- supposed- media experts on the question;
If Tariffs are so bad for the economy, then why do other countries place tariffs on US goods?

I'm currently dumping the 1/3rd $$$ I have in Money markets and will be getting that money in the markets maybe as soon as next week. I was thinking the Vix at 28 would be higher on a day like today with a lot of tech off 7%+...there will probably be another leg down.
