Leupold 2.5-8 on 300 Winchester for Elk

The 8 power is going to leave you wanting more in elk country.

Why? Not everyone is shooting game over 500. Even then, if it dials accurately 8x is plenty well beyond that. Most elk are killed well within MPBR. I know a lot more people who missed an opportunity with too much magnification when a close encounter came up, than ones where a shot was passed because the elk was too small in the scope.

It’s my scope of choice. I’ve got one on every big game rifle I own and will likely put one on every future rifle I buy. Between the physical size, weight, eye relief, length of the eye box, tube length and position and subsequent mounting position, cost, reliability, easy and lifetime warranty, FOV, magnification range, alumina covers, etc. they check every box for me. From .243’s to .338’s I have never felt under scoped at a max of 8x out to 400 yards and the low end works beautifully on close or moving shots. My next favourite would be the 2-7 VX2 and then a distant third would be the 3.5-10 VX3i. Most guys are over scoped and don’t know it, I would suggest you go for it and I’m guessing you’ll be happy you did.

I love the 2.5-8 VX3, only downside is short tube makes mounting on LA rifles like a 70 difficult without extended bases, so I use 3-9 or 3.5-10 on those.

I limit myself to 400 yards on big game and 98% of my shots at game have been on 4x, which is where the scopes live when hunting. High power only at the range or when using BDC reticle over 300 yards. Haven't made a lot of long shots, but am 3 for 3 at 420, 475, and 500, so my system works well for me. I had a hunting guide that was shocked when he found out I had my scope on 4x after making a series of 200-300 yards shots on plains game. Couldn't understand how anyone could shoot that far without big magnification. I've done a lot of iron sight shooting out to 600 yards, so even 4x seems like cheating.
