Let's talk water....

Looking at upgrading my "water system" this year, so let's hear what everyone is using to carry, store, filter water.

Nalgene?

Camelbak bladder?

MSR Dromedy Bag?

Platypus?

Katydan?

Sawyer?

Tablets?

I like filters. I have a Katadyn hiker pro and use platypus bladders for carry and storage. I just dont like to wait on tablets to work if i want water rightnow. But, the tablets are superlight and cut your water system down by several ounces.

3 L Camelback with (2) 1 liter water bottles. Katadyn Hiker Pro water filter.

One bottle is for powdered drink mixes. I have another bottle that carries my cooking water and the Camelback is straight drinking water. I dont like putting drink mixes through the camelback system its harder to keep clean and leaves an aftertaste. Its also easier to cook by just opening a bottle and pouring it into my cooking pot instead of trying to pour it out of a bladder.

MSR is my preference for bladders for sure. They are bullet proof. You can count on them, but they may not be as convienient as others imo. Camelbak military bladders also look nice. Also I always take a Nalgene, good backup for a popped bladder and a Nalgene has many many uses.

As for filter, tabs, uv. Ask yourself where and how much water is available to you in the area your hunting? Is the water dirty? filled with crap? Do you not know where your getting water? Id opt for a filter. I own a katadyn hiker and a msr miniworks.

If I know I can get most my water from clean running streams or springs. Ill take tabs every time.

No UV use so I cannot comment on that. but id like to try it. Battery weight kind of scares me though.

I usually always have the camelbak full while hiking and the others empty. The others are typically reserved for camp use or for use with the filter. Total kit weighs about 12 oz dry. I like the camelbak while actively moving for the sheer convienience of it, and the gatoraide bottle for camp. One platypus is used as the dirty water bag for my filter, and the other is just for extra capacity if needed.

I used to carry a MSR miniworks, 3 1L nalgene bottles, and sometimes a camelbak. That setup weighed 40 oz without the camelbak! So i was able to shave a good deal of weight, and i have not lost any functionality. The only change i make to this system is that in the Winter I will leave home the camelbak and add a 1L nalgene in its place.

With the hose barb adaptor i can very quickly setup in gravity filter mode, in line filter mode, or filter directly into my camelbak through the drink tube.

I have source 2L and a 2L platypus with a n AQuamira frontier pro filter and Aquamira tablets that have worked well for years now.
I am thinking of the sawyer inline though.
