Let's talk Headlamps

I have a blackdiamond that I permanently borrowed from my wife and also a Fenix ....don't ask which models. But they both have worked super for quite awhile.

My requirements:
AA only
Red light
Easy access buttons for use with gloves
Multiple brightness levels to preserve battery.

I use a Fenix HL 30 without the cross strap. I use it daily for the past 4 yrs or whenever they were released. It also goes on every hunt. Meets all my requirements. I carry a Zebralight as a backup.

What do you guys use the red lamp for?

I carry a Zebralight H52w AA Headlamp Neutral White and a Zebralight H502r Red AA Flood Headlamp with me both are extremely light and are on the same head strap for convenience. You wont go wrong with these two head lamps. My second favorite and backup is a Streamlight 14514 Sidewinder Compact II Military Model Angle Head Flashlight It has white blue and red led's with three settings for each color and infrared. This light has been bomb proof over the years just a little heavier than the Zebralight's.

On the trail when close to elk. The Red, Green, or blue wont spook game like the white will.

Black diamond spot has worked well for me. I don't carry a spare.

My newest is a Black Diamond Icon. It's nice to be able to dim it from the 200lumen and it has red light. I bought it because my GPS runs AA's and it's nice to run everything I bring off the same battery size. I've only had it for about 6 months thought so it's not field proven yet, but I've beat the hell out of it using it on numerous projects around my farm and it still has no issues.

It will also help preserve your night vision a little bit but the main reason is what was stated before, it doesn't scare the game as much.

I prefer to have 2 types of headlamps for 2 specific purposes. One low light, preferable colored for walking in/out of my hunting area in the dark. The other is a super bright one for processing in the dark. It is possible to find one that fits both, but often the bright ones don't go dim enough nor do the dim ones get bright enough. I have only found one that fits all of these needs although not quite as bright as I would like. I have a much brighter option that I can carry for an ultra-light option that is essentially a super cheap Chinese 18650 Cree headlamp.

What do you guys use the red lamp for?

I use the red light when getting situated in a pre-dawn treestand so I don't look like a seashore lighthouse and I keep some night vision when I turn the light off.

I just picked up a PETZL Taktikka RGB. Like it so far. 4 brightness levels, plus Red, green, blue (thus RGB). The red and blue are very dim...which I think will be ok.

Princeton tec remix, nice mix of bright single led and 3 low output leds (available in red). Light weight, reasonably priced,runs on aaa, get an entire trip on one set of batteries

I dumped the BD headlamps after they kept turning on in my pack - despite the fact that there is a lockout feature on the power button. Almost every time I went to use it the batteries were dead, and I hate the notion of having to install the batteries just in advance of using the headlamp.

Another vote for Petzl. Tikka xp and e-lite for emergency.

Zebralight! I've used many of the models from each manufacturer: BD, Princeton Tec, Petzl. Zebralight is by far the best.
