Sadly it ended with a hot bowl of tag soup. I'll post a longer reply when I get a chance. From what most people have said, it was "just one of those weird years" where it didn't get cold until late, the bison didn't really move, etc. etc. Usually bison are taken in December but on my first trip up mid-December there were only a few in a group outside the refuge. I haven't seen any official reports but I don't think many if any were taken before January (perhaps on some other land that was huntable). Overall, it was a great opportunity and both trips were great. While I didn't end up filling a tag, we learned a lot and got to see some amazing sights. For a non-res, it's a pricey tag, just for a cow at $1000 much less the $2500 for a bull. That said, I'll probably put in for the draw again. If I don't draw again, I'll probably still go up again next year just to see all the animals.
Yeah, most definitely. By far, the worst part about a hunt like this is finding the animals isn't all that hard. They just weren't where I could legally hunt them and they pretty much knew it. All they had to do was to move 1/4-1/2 mile across a road and a small stream but even then, as a DIY hunt, it's all about being in the right place at the right time.
Let me know if these photos don't show
I'll still put together a full post with more pics and hopefully some info that others may find helpful in the future.
Thanks a bunch for all your posts, I've been following the whole time and was really hoping you would get one. I almost put in for the Custer State Park hunt, but thought I would have a better experience on this one. Good luck in the draw this year!!!!
