I was thinking along the same lines when I had my 338/06 built.
Skeletonized Ruger 77 MK II with a 10 twist Broughton 5c barrel set in a Ruger boat paddle stock. 6lb 12oz scoped and loaded set up for 185 grain TSX.

Then I “discovered” a .270 150 grain partition will do the same with better SD and less recoil.

Willing to part with my 338/06 anytime now.

My .338 win is a kimber Montana with a 23” barrel sitting in a Pendleton composite stock with a 14.75” lop, kimber bottom metal off a classic, Talley lightweights holding a vx3 2.5-8x36 leupold and a titanium bolt handle. All up she’s 6lbs 15oz. my next move is to get some alloy bottom metal off a win mod 70 and modify it to fit. I should be able to drop another 8 Oz.
It shoots 225 ttsx around 2880 fps or 250 accubonds a bit over 2700.
The only other .338 win I’ve owned was a browning A bolt 2 that was a few lbs heavier and kicked a lot worse then this kimber. I chalk it up to the stock design but either way it’s a joy to carry and not to shabby to shoot either.
Looking back there was no reason to change the stock but I got it for a really good price and I wanted the increased lop because I’m tall with a long neck and factory stocks are always a little short. If I was doing it again I would probably put it in a modified wildcat composite stock for a win mod 70 and I think I could get the package under 6lbs scoped with either alloy bottom metal or a blind mag.

She’s third from the left in there. All slathered up with lanolin grease as we’ve moved overseas for a few years.

I took a Kimber 8400 338 Win mag and had Kevin Weaver drop it into a McMillan Hunter's Edge, cut the barrel to 20", put on a Hawkin's brake, cerakote, add front irons. It's a pure joy to carry and weighs under 8 pounds with a NF 3x9 SHV. It shoots factory Barnes Vortx 225TTSX's at 2750 in ragged holes. I could push it harder and faster with reloads, but there's no point in changing it now, it shoots great.

My 8mm Remington Mag has Mojo, but if you don't reload..... ammo is a serious issue.
Using Sierra 220 grains @ around 3000 fps.

I had a Montana rifle co. X3 in 33 Nosler. Loved the cartridge but hated the rifle so it got rehomed and my Fierce edge in 33 Nos should be here within the week. I was getting right around 2,850fps with 250gr. Barnes LRX out of a 26" barrel. I can't speak to the edge as I've only handled it in store but I say steer clear of Montana rifle co. with their poor quality control and crap customer service.
What didn't you like about the Montana?

338 RCM, TI action 22in proof barrel, Manners EH1 carbon...about 8lbs scoped...deadly with a 225 grain bullet...I have 2 one with a 19 in barrel one with 21..I'm kind of a RCM fan boy. I'm kind of amazed what you can get out of a 225 grain bullet in 20 in barrel

I liked it !

I have two...on my ruger I have a simple trim, light VX3 3.5x10, on my carbon gun Swarovski Z5 3.x18--I really like the 215 Serria out of it--good speed and performance.
