Lets see that pretty wood

This thread reminded me,

This is a .22 that grandad built for my dad in 1954, it’s been through every kid in the family as a starter rifle. Tomorrow my wife and I will be bringing its 12th owner into the world :)

Man, that is one of the coolest things I've read on here. Congratulations on both that awesome family heritage, and continuing it! Good luck tomorrow!

Not the best pictures but what I have on my phone.
A Winchester M70 walnut super grade and Tikka hunter walnut.

Some fine wood and firearms gents, thanks for sharing!

Here's one for you all. Looking at these blanks and without being able to see in person, which one would you choose if you were picking one for a rifle? Right, middle or left?

Agree with that^^. The middle blank looks flat sawn so the direction might be ok, but youd need to see the edge grain to be sure. If the edges arent straight thru the blank they could all be issues.
They all look nice visually, so assuming all else is equal Id decide based on grain flow, and maybe weight.

Good source of tools here
The basics:
1) a spacing cutter handle and a double cutter blade or three. I like 22lpi or even 20lpi.
2) a single line cutter
3) a grease pencil
4) some clear, stiff acetate plastic to make a 60* angle template and a flexible straight edge.
5) auto detailing pinstripe tape in 1/8” and 1/4”. Plastic label-making tape can be nice too for straight lines. Both help tape off borders and set your master lines. Not strictly necessary but really helpful.
6) an old throwaway walnut stock from the throwaway bin at the local gun shop to practice on (or finish your own piece of scrap wood to practice on.)

@Steve300xcw if its helpful shoot me your email and I am pretty sure I can send you a instruction guide with pictures that a friend of mine did.
