I think it’s awesome that you caught this elk in the emerging nymph stage. I’ve seen them with dirt all over them but never actually seen a shot of one coming out of the ground like that. So lucky that you camped right on top of his burrow. Of course all hell breaks loose if they actually emerge inside the tent. Only those who are very versed in the elk life cycle get to see this. Even more rare...? The larval stage.

edit: I just read this over. Try to hear Steve Irwin the crocodile Hunter and put an exclamation point after every sentence. “Oy thenk eets auwsim thet yew cawt thees ulk inn thee emuhging neemph stayge!!”

Cabelas Outback lodge 8x8 on the right. Light and easy setup for early season truck camp. Blue one is an old (heavy) aluminum-pole backpack tent. Forget the name. Both near the Pigeon River Country. Michigan’s elk area. Raghorns.

Had to cancel the trip this morning due to work issues (my own business, so no choice). So here's the current view of my "camp".

Disposable tarp I brought for meat, and a trekking pole on deadfall. Climbed out to do jumping jacks every hour to stay warm until the sun came up, so I could keep tracking my bull.
