Looking for recommendations for a “legit” boonie hat where I can cut back the brim (if necessary).

I decided to trim a Rothco boonie I’ve had for a few year and discovered the brim stitching was fake. Not ripstop-ish. Turned my $15 hat into a $0 hat. :)

I can’t find any online sources that mention ripstop or stitched brims so I thought I’d check with the gurus here.

The original Mil spec hat is still made and sold by Propper. Brim stitching is real, but you will still get edge fraying if you don’t re-finish the very edge of it.

Pentagon Tactical and Helikon Tex also make boonies with a shorter brim. May be easier than cutting and refinishing one.

I had my wife zigzag stitch a Kuiu hat where I wanted the brim length. Then cut with a scissor and darkened edge with a marker. worked great.

I was wondering if the Kuiu boonie brim is stiff? I've heard good things but wondering about drawing and shooting a bow with a hat like this. The others listed and one having a shooters cut seems like they address that issue..?

The Kuiu is flexible enough for my stickbow. Original was too long and would obstruct vision with bow at full draw. Works great now. PM if you want pics

I got one of the Carcajou boonies a couple years ago for hunting with my longbow. It works really well for me and Isn't as hot as issued boonies I've worn in the past.

Not sure if it qualifies as “legit” but so far I’ve been happy with the Gohunt boonie.

No issue drawing my recurve with it on, and has a decent enough brim to provide some shade

Slangvel on youtube will make a boonie with whatever brim size you need. Excellent quality

Just put in an order with slangvel - great guy and very responsive. Reached him
Via email because I don’t do facebook. Lots of options. He recommended the recce style for a shorter brim and he’s putting an adjustable shock cord for me. Problem with full brim hats for me is the brim hitting the lid on my pack - annoying. Woodland camo for nostalgia for me. Blend of cotton and nylon. His words “short 1 3/4 inch brim, it has foilage loops and soft side venting”. Told I’m he could omit the foliage loops if he wanted. Put the order into today (sat) and he said he’d make over the weekend and ship out on Monday… that is impressive! And I’m not in any rush.
