You kind of have to wonder about the feeling of invincibility that the "beam me up Scotty" nature of satellite communication and helicopter rescue imparts.

I agree, the story was written to elicit a response. Still crappy for his buddies to leave and continue on.

That being said, I'm not leaving a buddy on the side of a trail somewhere for a rescue. Call me old fashioned but you just don't do that.

Even if he told them to leave, he was injured and someone should have stayed. Start together and finish together.

I'm not sure what a "traumatic shoulder injury" is, or how it precludes one from walking. Not advocating leaving him behind, but between that and not knowing what was discussed among the group before they left him, I'm inclined to say he bears some responsibility.
