Will be in Montana September 17th-29th for elk hunting. The unit we have decided on is in grizzly territory and we will have camp on are backs. Would leaving the tent setup during the day while we are hunting a good idea or would packing it up be better. Still tossing the idea around but not sure. We definitely will not have any food, snacks, or scented anything left in tent during the day.

Also haven’t ruled out an electric fence idea. May look for one in Bozeman before we hike off into the unit

Hunt the Gravely Range in southwestern Montana where there are supposed to be a fair amount of Grizzlys. Have never seen one. I am not aware of anyone that takes their tent down during the day when out hunting. Pays to be bear aware but not something to be spooked about. There are a couple unlucky hunters or hikers every year that get attacked but mostly from sows with cubs or stumble on a bear on a food source.

Bro, the entire state is griz country these days

Keep the food secure and keep camp clean. Say a Hail Mary when you leave camp and hope for the best. All you can really do.

We had a griz and her babies in camp last year. Ha nothing makes you feel alive like sow a twins just feet away with only a thin tipi wall between you.

Those things can smell the food residue on your clothes from days ago. And they're just curious.

I hear AZ and NM don't have griz. Colorado too.

Hunt the same general area as hiker270, I've seen limited bear sign and never have actually seen a bear. We leave camp set-up and see many who leave it set-up as well. I think calling a forest ranger for the area you're going hunting will give you a good idea as to how much bear activity will actually be where you're hunting.

Also, Hiker - good luck unless you're shooting at my elk 😁
