Top
1st: 100 g merino badlands
2nd heavier merino? Synthetic?
3rd FL navigator Or badlands flex hoody
4th puffy jacket Eddie Bauer probably needs swapped out
5th badlands venture jacket

Bottom
1st merino 250 g
2nd ion x pants or badlands calor pants
3rd badlands venture bibs

Looking at my layering setup for moose hunting in northern BC this year. Our hunts mainly consist of easy to moderate walks into lake side stick blinds and then sitting for 3-4 hours.

Weather ranges from 15*-50*, lots of wind and rain previous year.

I think for your second layer a synthetic is better for retaining warmth and breathability. I feel the heavy merino base layers are best as the first layer if I’m sitting all day in treestand. If I’m moving or have a long walk I prefer a lightweight merino with a synthetic over it. I think you’ll like the FL Navigator. I’m not to familiar with Badlands Clothing, but if it’s windy you want a windproof outerlayers.

Sounds like I may need to get a heavy merino and a synthetic. Sometimes we drive almost directly the stand, sometimes we’re walking quite a bit. Varies a lot

I’m thinking the first lite will be much warmer for the weight then my current badlands hoody. The venture jacket is windproof, as are the bibs. Im planning on switching the majority of my gear to Sitka or first life in the coming year, my son being in the nicu delayed doing it this year.

For Southeast Alaska hunting during the winter (usually around 20F) i wear:

Top:
1: Kuiu merino wool long sleeve
2: Fleece long sleeve if it’s not too cold, thick wool coat it It is going to be cold
3: Kuiu Yukon Shell
4: hunter orange wool hat

Bottom:
1: Kuiu merino wool long pants
2: Kuiu Attack pants
3: Kuiu Yukon Pants

And no I’m not sponsored by Kuiu, but I should be!

Regardless of brand or material, my second layer goes on and comes off a lot, so something that plays well with your first layer is important. Too many full length zippers adds bulk, so I’ve been most happy with something like a 1/4 zip polypropylene pullover. A lot of guys don’t like these, but I like the color of the military models and feel of the fabric, and the smoothish exterior allows the next layer to go on and come off easily as well. Unfortunately they don’t cost a lot and that turns off a lot of guys looking for “the best” which must cost more to be good.

There's a lot of good new "Polartec" / "Polypro" surplus layering items subdued colors that cost next to nothing online. As Taperpin said they aren't name brand, but if you damage them, you aren't angry about it.

150 gram merino badlands base layer (85% merino)
250 gram black ovis beavercreek merino 1/4 zip (52% merino)
First lite navigator hoody
First lite brooks down hoody (3.5 oz 800 fill)
Badlands venture jacket (80 grams primaloft gold)

Bottom

150 gram merino badlands base layer (85% merino)
250 gram black ovis beavercreek leggings (52% merino)
First life navigator pants
Badlands calor pants

This is some updates I’ve made and tweaks. Still deciding whether I want to find a set of bibs or a different pair of pants to replace the badlands calor.

Also I decided to plug it in to ChatGPT and have it rate and make some recommendations. It was kind of cool to use AI as a tool for gear. Its biggest recommendations were to find a 250 gram layer with a higher merino percentage or a heavy grid fleece layer.
