Preparing for my first elk hunt. I've hunted Whitetails in the South from a stand, but running around a mountain is foreign to me! So, any help from experienced western hunters is appreciated! Here's what I've got so far:

Top:
Base/Wicking: Aerowool Minaret (Long Sleeve)
Mid Layer: ???
Puffy: Hell's Canyon Speed Shrike
Rain: ???

Bottom:
Pants: Prana Zion Stretch
Base/Wicking: ???
Rain: ???

Thanks!

I did the exact hunt this past September, I was in Southern CO at about 9,000 or so.

Base - Aerowool - perfect choice
Mid Layer - I used the FL Halstead, worked great
Puffy - I had a FL Cirrus, only used it early am and late pm
Rain - FL Vapor

As you can tell, I'm a FL fan, but you have a great start, it did rain on me way more than I thought so rain gear is definitely needed. I brought Allegany FL base layer and only used them one more, other than that I wore my Obsidians the whole time and didn't need anything else.

Good luck!

In hind sight do you think the aerowool bottoms would have been better for you than the Allegheny?

do you like Kuiu at all? I would add the Peloton 97 and 240 as mid layer options ( the 240 is wind resistant) and for rain gear maybe the Ultra NX top and Chinook bottom (both in their outlet right now I think) The alpine pant is great.. With hip vents is gets you through a wide range of temps./

you nailed it with the aerowool base layer.

I'm somewhat of a minimalist and would love to carry just one mid layer (is that too much wishful thinking for out west?) With that in mind, would you recommend the 97 or 240, or split the two with the 200?

I'm going again this fall and definitely will have the aerowool bottoms, I tend to run pretty hot and the Alleghany was to much for me during this hunt.

Carrying one mid layer IMO is just fine. I'd go with the 240 hoodie if you like hoods. It's a very versatile piece. You might even add it to your whitetail system. I run hot so my mid layer is a lightweight vest for September here in CO. I'm a vest guy, some people aren't. Mid layers are so subjective.

So far the past two seasons here I’ve hunted here in Colorado during archery I’ve ran my Kanab 2.0 and a duofold t-shirt. It’s been fairly warm, during the day, in the mornings and evenings I’ll throw on a Chama hoody and a springer vest.
