Honest review on my custom Lathrop & Sons boots.

First, let me start by saying I have jacked up feet and ankles, and I’ve tried Crispi and Kenetrek boots before but they were far from ideal.

About a month ago I bit the bullet and reached out to Lathrop, James talked me through the entire process and I ordered my 3D Mapping kit. I received that in about a week and completed it and retired it. Within a week, James called me and spent almost an hour on the phone going through my problems and what they would build me to help. I went ahead and ordered my boots and orthotics.

About two weeks went by and I received my new boots and completed the steps listed and submitted the required pictures. James called me the next day to go through my post consultation and next steps.

Today marks the 4th I’ve been wearing them nearly the entire day around the house. I must say, these are the most comfortable pair of boots I’ve ever owned. I finally feel like I have the right arch support my feet need, as well as the right ankle support that other boots have lacked in the past.

Tomorrow, I’ll clean and wax these boots and then I’ll start putting some miles on them with the heavy pack, but based off my initial impression, these will be nothing short of amazing boots.

Would you mind sharing a ballpark cost?
Total I think it was around $1,100. I was able to use my HSA for these but if I could’ve used that I still would’ve purchased them knowing what I know now.

I suffer from flat feet, plantar fasciitis, I’ve broken my right foot twice. So these are all worth it to me.

Thanks. I've always been somewhat interested in these but their pricing is not transparent at all.

I’ve always wanted to do this as well but the price scares me away. I do pretty darn good with Meindl’s. I have a high arch, wide forefoot, 2nd and 3rd toe are as long or a bit longer than my big toe, and a narrow heel.

I agree that the boots fit great and feel great. I still wear them occasionally on guaranteed dry days. Be cautious about them leaking and if they do don't leave negative feedback on their social media!

I get it, I think the pricing can fluctuate based off your needs and I needed a lot haha.

I don’t think that’s the case. The only thing I needed was them not to send me a pair that was two sizes too small. Other than a single return from size 12 to 14, there was no additional back and forth and I paid the same (and I even had a foot mapping discount).

It’s not transparent on the website. That’s for sure. But they don’t hold back when you talk to them on the phone…enough to make me decide to hold off lol.

You can buy the boots sans the mapping and customization. They are quite nice imo, albeit a bit heavy for my preference but very comparable to other MTN boots. L&S have had good Black Friday discounts the last several years. So there’s nice value to be had there.

The consultation and orthotic (and any customization actually done to the boot) are nearly double the cost of just the boot at those prices, so it’s a matter of do you need that specialization.

I like the orthotic quite a bit, but I’m not sure it was essential for me. The out of the box fit worked nicely for me and I didn’t require any actual boot modifications. I’m happy with them, but from a value standpoint I’m not sure the custom route was great value for the money.

But, I don’t regret going this route either, as the end result for me was foot comfort I’m not complaining about. Would a Sheep Feet or other insole have been cheaper and as good or nearly so, I can’t say.
