Last Minute Mountain Goat Rifle

I don’t even make eye contact with the uncivilized filth that shoots without silencers.
I have like 4 suppressors I use at the range and in the low country. I’m not carrying a Cumbersome hunk of metal in the mountains to take a couple shots at an animal. I carry ear plugs in my bino harness takes about 10 seconds to put them in. And yes I shoot a TI muzzlebrake that weighs about 2 oz and works better for muzzle jump than a 12 oz suppressor. I hunt in elevations 5000 to 13000 feet suppressor less lol

Below is a picture with a 300 WSM HNT 26 folder 20” barrel with 2” muzzlebreak covered with a StHealthy hunter rifle case strapped to my back and I have no trouble with it hanging up in the brush. You can also see I have a EXO pack with rifle carrier if I need it for faster access, but I rarely use it. And I’m not worried about getting eat by a grizzly bear.
  • Lightning Odds: Approximately 1 in 500,000 to 1 in 1 million annually.
  • Grizzly Attack Odds: Roughly 1 in 2.7 million visits in high-risk areas.

That pic is a great example of what I’m talking about. Barrel is behind you and over your head, that works fine until you’re trying to go under stuff.

I apprecaite all (or at least most), feedback so far.

As for a build budget, none in particular. I'm trying to keep the base rifle under 7K or so. If I wanted to use a rifle I already own, then I would do that. But most of my chamberings are .30 cal or larger and none of them fit the niche I want. I do have a old .270win that is a great gun, but it wont fit the niche as well as a new build.

As for the supressor, I will look around at the suggest options. Odds are that I will end up with Tbac due to having one of thiers already and knowing how bomb proof they are. Albeit not the lightes. Likely going with the Magnus K, which gives better supression than the Ultra 5 but weighs similar to the Ultra 7. I will go further and advocate thier utility by lengthing out the recoil pulse and reducing sound, both making the rifle more acurate. They are heavier, but I rather drop 1lbs from my weight than go without it.

As for caliber, I am fairly steadfast with a 7mm chambering. I have plenty of friends who have killed browns and moose with 6mm and smaller, but I still can't convince myself to go that small for either. While this rifle is not intended as a brown or moose rifle, I still want it to be able to confidently take that game if the circumstnaces enable it. Neither will (likley) be in the prime goat country, but the ground I have to cover to get there will have both and I am never one to pass up the chance to put game on the ground.

I plan on going no longer than 20" for the barrel with a folder. I use a Kifaru Gun Bearer or can stap the rifle onto the back of my pack and it wont hang over my head. I've fought enough brush in my life to learn this lesson.

Keep the input comming!

To each his own I guess. But no way am I ever shooting a gun without a suppressor lol. I hated having to deal with ear pro or shooting without ear pro. I take the weight penalty
Here in wyoming it best to wear ear plugs to prevent the wind buffering so i usually have them in anyways.

One or two shots for a big game isnt what bothers me. Its the days im bird hunting and take dozens of shots with a shotgun.

No one has really mentioned one of the other suppressor benefits. It isn’t just your hearing. Animals mostly have an atypical reaction to a shot - best way I can describe this is they obviously hear something, but the direction appears to be unclear to them, and their reaction is muted. As far as a killing tool - they increase the shooter’s effectiveness as well as can keep the animal closer on a miss. With minimal weight to Ti ones, penalty is huge.

One other thing to consider is right before the shot. It’s a hell of a lot easier to ID and discuss go/no go and what goat to shoot without earplugs, because you are suppressed.

Not calling it over/under rated, just what I’ve seen.

Your thread is last minute mountain goat rifle now your mentioning moose and brown bears that’s whole different ball game. Mountain goat and sheep weigh less than 350 lbs and live in rough country which to me means light weight smaller caliber compact rifle. Brown bears and Moose larger caliber and heavy bullets in a 300 WSM, 300 WIN, 300 PRC and 300 Weatherby.
For 7K you can build two rifles to fit the bill for both small/medium and large/extra large game. Use the same scope and suppressor you feel the need to have, if I wanting to save money that 1K be the first thing checked off the list but each his own. You can pick up a used NXS 2-10x42 on here for around $1300 I just bought one yesterday with rings. I purchased a Christensen Arms Ridgeline 300 WIN 24” on clearance for $1400 HNT 26 blemish stock for $900 NF SHV 3-10x42 $600 used on here weighs under 8 lbs and pushes 208 ELD-M 2900 fps 1/2 moa groups killed several elk, caribou and grizzly with it. I sold the old stock for $300 which would have been just fine the way it was. 7K is a lot to spend on one rifle but have it.

I don’t have an honest answer as of yet, I just put the 25 CM together but I do like the heavier bullets in the 25 CM. I have shot a few whitetail with the 6 CM with the 115 Bergers and it did the job, but no more deader than my 243 with 95 Bergers lol. I’d would say if you couldn’t kill it with the 6 CM you couldn’t have killed it with the 25 CM. Both are sweet shooting cartridges but I wouldn’t carry ether caliber for hunting animals bigger than 400 lbs.

I'm getting into hunting and will probably hunt nothing bigger than white tail (I know the standard answer is a T3X in 6.5 CM) but after being on this site for years and seeing the results I'm sold on the 6 Creed. I'll be 42 this year and don't think i'll ever draw a good tag for mule deer.

Take what people say on here with a grain of salt. They shoot moose and brown bears with a 6 CM. If I was just going to have one cartridge between the CM I’d choose the 6.5 bullet selection is way more versatile 95-159 grain bullets. At 400 yards with a 115 which is the heaviest bullet in .243 only has around 1400 ftlb energy and that’s hand loading it hot. Just my opinion and on here opinions are like azzholes every one’s got one. Jack O’Conner and Gordon Eastman are rolling over in their graves, them guys were real hunters they were tuff look at their equipment lmao. Just like climbing Mt Everest Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are rolling over in their graves, now anyone can do it just show me the oxygen and $$$$. America has gotten wick and woke. I just got on here to purchase a scope and got caught up in all the nonsense. PM me if you’d like some info. I’m not bragging but I’ve shot a lot of stuff and went through a lot of cartridges and bullets and I know what has an hasn’t worked for me. Have a safe and lovely day all.
