Ladder test

If you can tolerate the lower velocity, you should have a nice accuracy node at 42.4gr.

Is This normal to see velocity drop off when reaching max load? When loading the last few they were compressed. I did not have any pressure signs and thinking of reloading the 43-44g with longer coal. I loaded these at book spec. I think I should have room.

To me the drop off suggests pressure. Sometimes signs of pressure can be subtle, just a thought.

Of those loads you tested, where did you see the best accuracy? The target doesnt mean much without some explanation.

What distance was the target? Also we need to know each shots location on the target.
Just judging from your data I would retest 43gr and higher. If no pressure signs I’d test up to 44.6 or 45.

I count 12 holes and 12 charge weights. I wouldn’t say the target or the graph is significant without more data points. I would rather shoot 3 of each charge weight.

One of each charge weight is my preferred method for initial testing. If the velocity is where I want it, I'll pick the charge weight in the middle of a flat spot like he has at 42.4gr. That charge will give consistent accuracy through small variations in pressure.

I'm betting the drop at 43.4gr was an anomaly and there is another node at the higher velocities. I'd chrono those top 5 charge weights again.

If that works for you, then go for it.

With more data points on the first trip to the range, I would have a better idea of what is an anomaly or not. I might not need to load more at the higher end.

True. Loading one at each charge is only more efficient if you trust your equipment and have your reloading process dialed in.

I load 1 for each charge weight but I shoot them at 400-500 yards so I can visually see where the node is at.. The target will tell you what you need to know..

My guess is there is a good node between 42.2 and 42.6. Is it a temp stable powder? What were the conditions? Hunting or Target round?

Do you need the additional ballistic advantage of an additional 50fps to 100fps?

Answers to those questions would help to focus further testing within that node and whether to waste any time testing for a higher node.

(Though my guess from the decreasing fps is that there is pressure there and that next node would require a different powder or a change primer or COAL)

So I went to load up some at 42.4 and play with seating depth. I measured my max coal and I was .12" off the lands. I realize now I should have done this in the first place. Still learning. I loaded some up last night .02" off the lands and im going to run the test again. Im thinking the extra case capacity might get me a better burn and I might get another node? Thanks for all your replies. Im having fun learning this stuff.
