KUIU just put their kutana jackets on sale for a pretty good price ($180) was thinking about picking one up but was curious what the difference is in the kutana and the guide? Anyone have experience with both of these?

I have a guide and have been wondering the same thing, but at that price I just picked one up. Thanks for the heads up on the sale!

I have both. It would be very difficult for me to say one is absolutely better than the other but I lean to preferring the Kutana. The Kutana line is geared towards being more durable in brush and thorny patches. I do feel like the Kutana has a better range of motion. I also have the Axis which I think I prefer over all. The fit of it is on par with the others and having the rain shell material in key places makes it very versatile. If you are looking for a first softshell it would be hard to look past the Kutana at the discounted price. If you have a guide already I am not sure it is worth switching.

No but I’ve not had both in 20 degree weather with 20 mph winds.

I owned the guide but I found it was too warm for late Sept/early Oct elk hunts so I sold it.

Saw the new kutana and I sort of regretted the sale of the guide because it was a great jacket. Bought the kutana because it was more breathable and less insulated. I have lived in the jacket this elk season. It's been wetter and colder than past years and I've worn the kutana with the axis hybrid pants for brush busting. The pants have overheated me but thankfully they have the hip vents.

In short. I am an active hunter and I have been very happy with my kutana and it's been my most used piece of gear the last few weeks.

In regards to wind, it doesn't cut it completely so I'm having to learn how to layer up now that temps have dropped even more. I sat in a small clearing with FL wilkin under the kutana and FL 3/4 length base under my axis pants and my upper body was getting cold. FL wick SS over the wilkin likely would've gotten the job done. Pelton 240 would've been amazing (which I have but didn't bring but I will next time).

I am very happy with the kutana thanks to the range of conditions I could wear it in the the water resistance.

Hope that helps.
