Kuiu Frame Noise - but not the usual?

I see quite a few complaints about Icon Pro frames squeaking down in the lumbar pad area, but I've noticed several times mine squeaking where the load lifter straps go through the frame tabs. My buddy said his does the same thing.. Kinda drives me nuts when it does it because its like 3" from my ear.

Anyone else have that problem?

Fixes?

I now have owned my Icon 5200 for one year , I use it a lot through out the year not just for hunting season. I have had no issues with mine what so ever. I run it loaded or light loads in a day pack mode.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on a 5200, the frame tabs get inserted into slots on the bag, and then the load lifters attach to the bag itself, correct? In that case, the load lifter straps wouldn't be going through the little slots in frame tabs like it does on the smaller bags like 1850, 1800, 2200, etc.. so then those bigger bags wouldn't have this issue.

I’m wondering if you have dirt build up on the strap? That might cause some slight slipping making noise.

Mine does that but only when heavily loaded. I actually stuck a little graphite in that spot and fixes for a bit. Need to reapply every now and then.

That’s correct. The smaller bags don’t have the pockets so you run the load lifter straps thru the slots.
Could you possibly post a pic of the setup by the load lifters? Might be able to help you with this.

My 5200 squeaked from the same area, not at first but after I packed out a couple animals and then did it all the time. Training hikes drove me nuts. I dont have a fix for you, but I'll try some of the recomendations as its going to be either a loaner pack or I will put it in the classifieds.

Are you 100% sure that is where the squeak is coming from? Check and see if it's coming from the should strap at the point where the plastic little 'T tab' thing is located, which fits into the slot on the frame. It will sound like it is right by your ear. I have had a shoulder strap cause some noise there, when the T tab had come loose and would spin around. I contacted Kuiu and they sent me a new set of shoulder straps at no charge. If it is actually the webbing strap going through the slot in the frame stay, then cleaning the webbing strap with soap and water may help. I have found that later in the year, when I have sweated gallons into my pack, it may develop a squeak. Washing has always helped if it was dirt / funk related.
Hope this helps

Thanks LaHunter. How would I know if thats what causing the noise? Just checking to see if the T-tab is loose?

I can also make it squeak by just setting the bag on the ground and grabbing under the lumbar pad and pulling it forward away from the bag, but I'm not sure if thats the same squeak I was hearing the other day.

My EXO had the worst squeak of any pack i've owned and there was nothing they could do about it as it was a function of the construction and heavy loads created the problem.

My Kuiu packs occasionally make noise but its never been from the stay pocket or strap on the stay. I do use athletic tape where the shoulder strap "T" slides in the track and also athletic tape the bottom horseshoe on the frame and then squirt some graphite powder down in the belt area the horseshoe rides.
I would try working some graphite into the strap especially at the sewed point that is pulled tight up against the stay.

Is that one of their bags? The pictures make it look like the bag attachment buckles are a little too narrow creating a twist to the strap and pull to the inside? Its a duraflex buckle but I don't recognize the connection attachment.

No that is not one of their bags, but this squeak is happening with my Icon Pro 1850 (even with only 20#), and my buddy's pack does the same thing, especially when loaded heavily.

Try just pressing on the shoulder strap padding in the area of the T tab. If this is the issue, you will hear the noise and it will feel differently than the other side with no squeak. Also, check and see if the T tab will spin around, it is not supposed to
