Hi all,

I have the plan on hitting Colorado for a first backcountry elk hunt and would appreciate help on what clothes to take. I am an notorious over packer on any kind of travel I do so I am trying to get opinions on what I should not take. Plus I am going to be using kryptek and its hard to find information in comparison to FL, sitka etc. This is going to be the first or second week of September. I have done a ton of stand hunting in Ohio and the south but that is a different ballgame. What I have right now is below:

Top:
Valhalla 1/2 zip
Valhalla long sleeve
Merino LW long sleeve base
Dalibor 3 jacket

Bottoms:
Valhalla pants
Poseidon pant

I have plans to get some medium weight merino base bottoms to get me through possible cold spells with the valhalla pants but also have the idea to grab a pair of alaios pant that are a good price for my ridiculous 6'5" sizing.

Also, plan on getting a rain jacket but might pick up a vellus jacket as a rain/overkill heavy jacket in case of real cold. I'm not a fan of being cold so overkill is the game I play.

1. Would it be worth it to pick up and take a pair of alaios pants in addition to the valhallas?

2. Is the vellus way overkill this time of year? should I just get a straight rain jacket?

I also have hopes to make it home to Ohio to hunt the November rut so the heavier versions could be useful in the chaos of weather that is Ohio.

Appreciate thoughts. thanks

DISCLAIMER: I don't Hunt Colorado and I do not hunt early September. (Usually Late Oct., in Oregon).

I do have a lot of Kryptek. The valhalla pants are NOT warm by any means. I have a pair and they are for summer scouting. I much prefer the Dalibor 3 during season. They are quite a bit warmer.
The poseidon set is GREAT for rain gear, and in the pacific northwest I use it a LOT. Not sure how much in CO it will be needed. And I dont think it is made anymore, as I looked for some for my dad a few years back.

I don't know what the weather is going to be like when you go to Colorado, but I can tell you what I wore this past January in AZ for the OTC archery when temps where in the mid / high 30's - 50ish/60's.

Kryptek
Bottoms:
Aliaos pants
Mid weight merino base layer
I did have to take off the merino base layer when it got up in the 50/60's

Tops:
Kryptek
Mid weight and Heavy weight Merino base layers
Borealis hybrid jacket
Dalibor jacket in the AM then took off when it got warm
a few days I had all these on plus the Aquillo puffy jacket

Hope this helps

No way I would pack that Vellus jacket on a backpack hunt. If it did rain it would soak up so much water it would get ridiculously heavy. The Alaios pants would be my recommendation over the Valhalla.

I use alot of kryptek clothes

California summer to oct (80s-40s in the day time) I'll take this

Poseidon Jacket + pants always
Alios pants
Lt wt merino 1/4 zip top
Kratos jacket + vest ( 1 or both depending)
Or Vidar vest if I'll be wearing it alot
Dalibor jacket

I just layer accordingly

I cannot stand leggings under pants even when it's cold. I used to use dalibor pants in Nov but I got too fat for em and they don't make the bigger sizes anymore.

Separate sleep clothes not kryptek
Poly long sleeve shirt , mid wt poly leggings. I could use these for more warmth in the day if needed tho.

I'll supplement non kyptek merino or fleece jacket laster in the season.

The knee pads and wind resistance in the Alios beat out the valhala for me

Super helpful. I guess it would be a good idea to get alaios or maybe the dalibor pants but these may be a little to heavy for me, I probably will pack the valhalla pants too as an extra in case it is hot since they weigh next to nothing.

I did pick up a cador to try on and was planning to return it but for the price I got it at I could just keep it and use it as a puffy alternative this year.

I should be looking at a Poseidon jacket as well to cover a rain top then.

Sneaky, I thought the vellus was waterproof shouldn't it not absorb water ?

appreciate the input

I didn't mention it before but the Aquillo Jacket is amazing. Great lightweight and extremely packable. It goes under the Poseidon VERY nicely for when it is cold and wet.
And that Cadog set of pants are pretty heavy. They might be great for stand hunting, but I would think twice before wearing those on any backpacking trip. my .02.

Helpful Vault, I have been looking at the aquillo but have never been a fan of puffys. I may wait for a sale and pick one up but will plan to use the cadog I have in the meantime.

What are your thoughts on the poseidons in terms of sound?
I have the pants already and they are a tad loud but not as loud as some cheaper stuff I have used.

I got the aquillo on sale, as I probably never would've paid full cost for it. But it is defiantly worth the sale cost. Probably worth the full cost to for someone that backpack hunts more often than me.

The poseidon, could be a little loud for a stalking. But rain makes noise already.
I usually use rain gear when I am on a stand though or while glassing. If it is coming down pretty good I have hiked out with it on once. But I was packing meat so I was not real conscience of noise. I have always just taken for granted that true rain gear is louder than any "waterproof" jacket (that are never really water proof).

Vellus has a waterproof membrane in it, but the outer is fleece. It'll absorb a lot of water weight, you may not get wet, but it'll get heavy for sure. A lightweight puffy and light rain shell will serve you much much better.
