Kodiak Mountain Goat 2013

Well another adventure in the books. Had a great time on Kodiak with some amazing folks, fellow Roksliders to boot!!

Thanks again for taking me in and allowing me to experience such a rich part of Alaska's wilderness.

Truly blessed!

Let's hear the whole story. Not being an Alaskan, I don't think I am going to have the chance to hunt goats more than once and I'd like to experience as much of it thru those who can as possible.

:)

OK, how about answering a few questions?

Is that Kryptec raingear? How did you like it?

Rifle? Caliber and bullet, how far and what did he do when hit? Where did you hit him, and how far was it.

Looks like he took a littlemtumble.

I really messed up w/regard to Kodiak goats. I went on a semi guided Sitka hunt almost 10 years ago. The outfitter had VErY reasonable goats hunts. By the time a few years went by and I was ready to apply for the tag, he more than doubled his prices for a goat hunt out of my range.

How about a few more pics?

An Awesome Trip!

We truly had a great trip Dan, so glad you could join us!

I was blessed to harvest my second mountain goat on this trip, and my first billy (I took a nanny last year)

Definitely a great team to have in the field, and many hands sure make lighter work for butchering, caping and packing!

We were on Kodiak a total of 6 nights and 7 days, but between travel days and weather we really only hunted two days total. Our group of four harvested three mountain goats and two deer. None too shabby!

A super successful trip to the Emerald Isle for certain, and a great adventure for all of us.

Congrats there Mr. Daniel_M. Was a great trip for sure. Was a pleasure to hunt with you and a lot of fun to take you on your first mountain hunt!!! Congrats on the goat and thanks for helping with the packing. Donkey Dan is a lot of fun to have along!!!

I can do questions!

My "kit" was mostly Kryptek. Merino base, Alaios pant and a Kratos or Patagonia puffy top. In the above I was wearing a Koldo rain jacket but mostly to cut the wind. Can't comment too too much for rain gear, my last trip was busting alders in the pouring rain and, I was soaked. We were blessed this trip with good weather while we hunted away from base camp.

Once we were into our position of engaging animals it was a zero movement scenario to keep from blowing our cover. It was chilly after lying motionless on the ground.

My rifle of choice has been a Remington 700 XCR II, 300wm. I shoot either 180gr TTSX or NAB.

Animals were engaged at about 280 yards. First hit was dead nuts broadside through the vitals, #2 was a bit further back and the dropper was a neck entrance.

Billy was anchored hard after my first shot but it went down so quick.

I zeroed 1.5^ @ 100 for this trip and it payed off well. Second kill this year at 275 yards.

Glad I could pay it forward with some 100# pack mule action. Heehaw!!

Thanks again! Was a great adventure and really set the bar for my first Kodiak Goat Hunt. I learned a lot from you seasoned vets!

Some pics!!

You can spot a fresh hunter to The Rock just by lookingat their boots. They are dry!

The Beaver..

Look at these smilin faces!

Day #2 in Goat Valley. Climbing, glassing and hiding from elusive Goats!

Mr Steve on the glass. Wonderful man, partner and mentor.

With 4 cameras in the bunch, candids were plentiful. Luke was playing peakaboo with a few goats over a ridge.

Elusive deer!

Fresh backstraps smothered in potatoes, gravy and bacon.

Ok, work is getting in the way of my goat hunting now. Your thread has me vibrating to go, but gotta get through a couple more days of work. Last outing got me distracted by rams (that turned out to be short), but I know a couple good billies are up there. Glad to hear everybody was packing a camera, most important gear for the trip.

Thanks for sharing. And congratulations on a successful hunt.
Fresh backstraps smothered in potatoes, gravy and bacon. Man that looks good!

Thanks fellas!

2013 has been a very bittersweet year for me. Blessed to have teamed up with some of the finest folks I've ever had a chance to share a campfire with!
