Kodiak mountain Goat 2013

Looks awesome! Wish I could hunt goats on Kodiak! :)

You can man....I have been hunting goats on Kodiak since 2009...which is the last time I killed one myself....its the killing of the goats thats stopping ya as a non-res....you can pack mule all day long. :D Having been in on 13 goat kills on Kodiak I have to say I really enjoy it and getting folks on their first, or in Becca's case 2nd (yes she has shot more mountain goats than me), mountain goats. There is also the chance at deer so you can come along for the goat hunt experience and still have a chance to kill some deer too....not great odds on the deer where we goat hunt, but hey I got this guy so anything is possible:

Congrats on a great hunt!!!! I lived on Kodiak for a summer working as a guide. It was the most amazing place I have ever been. Spent 4 more years on the mainland were I met my wife (in a fish camp of all places). We talk about Alaska often but I think the only place I would return to is Kodiak.

When I was there in 06 the blacktails were so thick. We hunted for 3 days in August and glassed over 100 bucks. Is it still like that there? I thought I herd that that there was a big die off a couple of years ago.

Yep winter of 2011/2012 was killer on the deer. Hunted them in fall of 2011 before the big die off....a lot more deer around then than the past two years I've been to Kodiak...just my VERY unscientific observation.

Unscientific or not, it's a fact. Kodiak was decimated by that winter. One or two more years without a repeat winter like that and they will bounce back.

Great hunt guys, love the pics. My good friend leaves for his Kodiak Goat hunt in about 10 days I believe.

You guys use the ferry to get across? Or fly in from Anchorage? I guess one way you pay in $$, the other in time...

As little of miles as it takes to fly within state, idk how Alaska Airlines is still in business. That cc was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Yep, we are loyal Alaska Airlines Visa card users :) another great thing is that flights within the state you get three free checked bags per person. So between Luke and I we are allowed 6 bags and 300 lbs worth (6 x 50lbs per bag). Coming back with meat and my goat hide, we did end up paying $25 to have one overweight bag of 99 lbs. but still a pretty economical way to fly down there.

Our float plane pilot, however super awesome he is, does not accept AK air miles unfortunately :(

One of these years I'll take you up on that offer just not the same when I don't get to shoot. :)

We all flew down together using air miles.
What made you chose flying in vs taking the Ferry over? Was it just easier and less time involved?

Do you have a website for the pilot? Sort of penciling out in my head what something like this would cost me (in both time and money). I had a sheep hunt go bad on me a few years back. Bad being that all I saw were goats and goat season was a month away! :) I've always kept that spot in the back of my mind for a future goat hunt, once we get my hunting partner his ram. Amazing how many goats we saw... However, I've seen quite a few articles and posts on Kodiak and its always intrigued me as must go place, especially since I live up here... Decisions, decisions, : )

Taking the Ferry adds a lot of logistics that eat up a lot more time and the potential for delays. Plus another several hundred miles to drive to the port down in Homer. We didn't need a vehicle locally in Kodiak, our air taxi picked us up and shuttled us anywhere we needed to go to pick up supplies we couldn't fly commercially (fuel).

Also have to consider a weather delay on the return side....the ferry doesn't run daily whereas there's 2x flights a day. Miss the ferry, your SOL.

The ferry would probably be a good option if you needed a vehicle while you were there, say for a road system hunt (you only draw road system goat tags, but I believe you can take one deer off the road each year with harvest tickets). Taking the ferry is time intensive (11 hours from Homer to Kodiak, not including the 5 hours it would take us to drive to Homer from our house in Wasilla) and not inexpensive....it's $75 per person plus $152 for a vehicle up to 15 feet.
For a fly out hunt via float plane, you don't need a vehicle as most of the flight services provide free shuttle service to run you from the airport, or anywhere else that you need to go.

We flew with Roland Ruoss of Seahawk Air, and I can't say enough great things about both him and his staff. He is our preferred pilot for flights out in Kodiak.

We have previously flown with Andrew Air as well, and had nothing but good things to say about them either.

Wow, 11 hours from Homer to Kodiak? Is that on a paddle boat?

Hmm, looked it up. Does it go to Chenega Bay first then to Kodiak?

The ferry also only comes like every other day or something so it has to meet your schedule. I was looking at taking it when I was up there but the times never worked out for our plans.

Moffat Films.. Love it! : ) Good job putting it all together. Man, I really need to actually use my camera more.. Was this with the Olympus TG again? And the editing, good stuff!
