I was lucky enough to hunt with Greg Acord on Kodiak last spring and get an opportunity at this beautiful animal. He came to Greg's call crossing straight in front of me at 10 yds, saw me, turned and took 2 steps toward me looking me straight in the eye, then turned again toward Greg when I had a chance to slip a broadhead behind his shoulder. 30 seconds and 80 yds later he was down. To say that was a spiritual experience is an understatement. As I watched the arrow buy up to the fletching it felt as if I was now responsible for that bear. It turns out to be the new #17 P&Y and maybe the 3rd largest with a trad bow. Gear: Black Widow recurve @ 56lbs. 300 gr single bevel Tuffheads on cedar shafts. And a beautiful euro mount by Bone Heads of Gasport NY. And of course the amazing Greg Acord.Bear and G and J shoulder.jpeg

Pure awesomeness right there.

I guess you throw your nuts over the shoulder so you squash them in the truck door... ;)

I cannot imagine being that close with only a stick and string in my hands. Congratulations!

As a fellow trad hunter, getting after brown bears with a stick bow is absolutely epic...idk if I'll ever have the testicular fortitude for it
Thanks Ian. At my core, I am not really a brave guy. I have been pretty close a couple of times now and, though I can't explain it, have felt no fear. Maybe having a guide makes a difference. I don't know. But I do know that I am not a particularly 'tough guy'.

Congrats! That's a great story! What was your total arrow weight?
Hi BRDHunt. Total weight was 648gr with 40.4 FOC. Penetration was to the fletchings on a relatively short (30") arrow. Luck played a role all over the place on this hunt, including the fact that the broadhead entered vertically between 2 ribs so no bone penetration was required. All I really remember about the shot was telling myself to wait for the front leg to clear forward to expose the vitals. Everything else was just muscle memory. Amazingly, there was no fear on my part. I am NOT a particularly tough guy so I don't really know how to explain that. But the feeling of looking straight into that bear's eyes at 5 yds, seeing the detail of his hair and body structure up so close, and knowing from the fletching that the shot meant a quick and certain finish..... is unforgettable.
