Thank you for that tip. I am a new member but have read through the threads a ton before but am finally getting serious about a couple different Alaska hunts with a couple good buddies.

We will probably fly in a day or two early to an avoid any weather ( so I hear) and could potentially capitalize on an additional day of hunting. Are the weight limits the same for the charter and the commercial?
any other pro’s or con’s to either that I should be researching or asking more specific questions about when I call?

You can either fly commercial or charter a flight from Kodiak City to south end of the island. About the same price if you have a group of 6 guys. They have daily scheduled service to most of the small towns on the island.

If you fly in on a scheduled flight you can hunt that afternoon. If you charter you fall under the same day flying rule and cannot hunt until the following day.

That is incorrect. You can same day hunt blacktail deer in AK regardless of your access.

That’s what I thought too, maybe he was talking about the timing of the commercial flight???? Like it gets there too late to do much that day?? I don’t know.

No he specifically mentioned the same day flying rule.

Not a big deal. Most people don’t know the regs and many believe that paper copy given out are the regs for alaska 🤣

Thanks for clarifying.

I’ve done the same trip for both goats and deer. Haven’t looked at the regs but not sure if they fall under that same day air born rule. Also unsure about bears and same day flying

That’s a little scary you don’t look at the regs. Probably don’t look at the land status either.

For everyone that is looking into a kodiak or any hunt it is your responsibility to know the regulations and the land status where you are hunting. Kodiak boat based deer hunt transporters are notorious for dropping off hunters on private land/native land.

Do not trust OnX as while it is mostly correct there are a couple spots it is not. All easily obtained info ahead of time. I’ve seen numerous pics from a couple kodiak boat based charters that show the background proving they are on native land. Land that doesn’t give out access permits.

Don’t be that guy. Learn the regs and land status before you come. Youre already hitting the easy button going on a drop off hunt. Instead of sitting around all camo up fist bumping learn about where you are going. Lots of great gems to be had just looking up the history of land ownership on the island.
