Knife Suggestions

My BIL just returned from deployment and I want to get him a hunting knife for Christmas. He’s just started getting into hunting the last couple years and doesn’t have a nice one yet. It’ll be something of a do-all hunting knife for him to begin with. We have plans for a bear hunt this spring (assuming he doesn’t get deployed again in that time) but he will also do some bird hunting with me in the fall.

I want something that’ll be a nice tool for him and last a long time. I wish I would’ve thought about it sooner so I maybe could have looked into a custom knife. He wasn’t supposed to be home this soon so I hadn’t put much thought into it.

Anyway, looking to keep it under $150. What suggestions do you all have?

A Bark River Gunny may be a meaningful piece for him. The gunny is a very very good general purpose drop point and excellent hunting, bushcrafty and survival type knife. Although not a Randall, a common gift for service persons.

Folder or fixed? Buck 110 is classic. Spyderco Stretch 2XL is a great modern folder or the Military as a multi-purpose.

Look into the Hogue Extrak XL. Just a bit over your price range, but sub 3 oz, Magnacut steel and 8 inches in length.

I love the regular sized m4 hogue extrak. Used it the last 3 years. Very very happy with it, enough so that I ordered a magnacut version and the XL on black Friday this year.
Really just wanted to compare the magnacut to the m4 in the same blade (im a steel nerd).
But also wanted to try the bigger size.
They're on sale right now around 150-160$ if you look around.

Victorinox Swiss Army Hunter, about $70.00.

They make 2 versions, the original red and an orange one. Both are versatile, with saw and gutting blades. I've taken a lot of elk apart with them, as well as smaller animals. Never had a problem.

Dixie zipper is close to your budget though a bit over.

After receiving mine my MKC knives are going up for sale and I plan to order 2 more.

they the older version in 2 colors green or red with the roe deer head. worked for roe deer, red deer and chamois with no issue. worked great on our last black bear. the new orange was made in 2 versions as well one with a screw driver and the other version for removing the cork of bottle but that new version did not impressed me and i kept my green one. this is the knife when going light with an havalon or a tyto just in case.
