Klymit Static V Insulated vs Xtherm

I just ordered a standard wide xtherm on sale. I already have a Klymit Static V insulated with R Value 4.4 that I've been perfectly happy with for September backpacking so I'm second guessing myself. The xtherm is just really talked up and I figured the 6.9 r value would be noticeable and my kids could use my klymit, but am thinking about returning and saving my money for other things. Anyone use both and care to chime in?

I've used both (and many others). For me with either a quilt or bag with no bottom insulation it's not even close between them. Xtherm is the real deal when ground is frozen. The Nemo tensor insulated is between the two warmth wise and a touch more comfortable than xtherm for me so I use it early season. Good luck

~17 ounces for the XTherm and ~24 ounces for the Static V Insulated.

Lots of folks on this site spend way more per ounce saved.

Amen and amen. I had a klymit insulated pad and thought I was a wimp because I was always cold. Then I switched to a quilt and was shocked to feel how cold the ground pad was. Bought an xtherm and it’s way comfier and massively warmer.

Actually the standard wide is 22oz, so it's only 2 oz diff so not a consideration for me personally but cost is. That's about $64 per oz!

Do not get the klymit for cold weather camping. A good economical choice is Therm-a-rest basecamp.

Klymit lies about their R values. See here for independent tested values.

This is interesting, Klymit's site now lists "R-VALUE4.4/ASTM 1.9" so good for them listing that. What does the 4.4 even mean though? Edit - found this https://klymit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4417544635803-ASTM-R-Value.

Anyways, xtherms are on sale everywhere if anyone is interested.

I had an insulated Static V and thought it was outrageously cold, though it it is relatively quiet and comfortable. The XTherm blows it away for warmth.

I have both and find my Xtherm to be significantly warmer than the Klymit. In addition, I 'splurged' on weight and went Xtra wide on the Xtherm. It's a HUGE difference for comfort (far more comfortable).

The R values of the Klymit have been reported to be on the lower end of the new rating system as far as when those norms/system was established vs when Klymit's were posted.

You can read more here.

I own both. For me it’s not close on the comfort. I much prefer the Klymit. Stomach sleeper, with a quilt and sea to summit pillow and I’m good. Full disclosure, I took the Xtherm into the 20s, the lowest I’ve gone with the Klymit is around 35 so far. So not sure on the insulation yet.

Thanks for the heads-up on the sale price. Rei says they are discontinued... Any one have any info on that?

Just got the xtherm, thought I'd share. This is the standard WIDE xtherm just to be clear.

It's funny, with the pad, stuff sack (not pump sack), and repair kit, the klymit is 20.78 oz, the xtherm is 20.07.

With just the pad, the klymit is 20.21, xtherm is 18.94.

The klymit packs up way smaller. The xtherm packs taller, but would roll narrower, if it weren't for the monster valve. The klymit is 23" wide, xtherm wide is 25" wide. Xtherm seems as comfy as the klymit even though it's a little crinkly, I'm a side sleeper and I tried it out. The width is nice. I think I will keep it for the reputation and r-value, my kids can use the klymit backpacking with me (or I'll end up on it and they'll use the thermarest) I'll be able to test side by side. If I decide it's not better I'll put it up for sale and keep the klymit.

I don’t have enough nights on my xtherm yet so I cannot personally confirm, but there are a few members here that have mentioned they get significantly less crinkly over time.

I only have the Klymit never tried an Xtherm but I have had several other brands and the Klymit for me is the most comfortable pad I have ever used.
