I got lucky yesterday and the stairmonster was occupied when I got to the gym. So I did my normal stairs, 3 flights from top to bottom. One rep is up and down, did 40 reps or 120 flights in 30 minutes on the nose with #50 pack. I am 6' 185 and will be 51 come Labor Day. It was taxing for sure but not as bad as the machine for 30.

You old guys would kick my butt. I need to up my cardio big time.

I imagine I’m going to get some strange looks when I start bringing my pack in the gym.

Those are awesome man, I've never looked for em up in the panhandle but it looks like you've got it dialed! 20190723_180347.jpgthese are the ones I've found so far this year and I think if otc elk tags ever become a thing of the past I'm gonna devote myself to just finding sheds all year.

ok this thread made me wonder where i was at with stairs. I normally just hit a parking garage that has 5 floors and do that for 30-45 mins with pack and tennis shoes.

decided to try out a stair machine at a gym my sister works at today. never been on one and honeslty found it hard to get the footing right, the next stair would come up and my toes would be too far forward and get pushed back some. I guess it takes some getting used to.

i didnt do 30 mins as i ran out of time after signing too much i wont hurt myself paperwork.

45 yrs 165lbs 5ft10 and had 34lbs total pack weight.

Damn! 183 floors in 22 minutes with a pack is crazy!

I usually do 25lb pack, 20mins at level 8 or 10. Sometimes I do 1min intervals after 10mins as nd increase intensity up to level 15.

It kicks my arse at 6200ft of elevation.

If I knew you, I might strongly encourage you to partake in some self fornication. ;)

256 floors is absurd .

i got my ass handed to me in the mountains once a few years back by a guy i was embarrassed to say the least. I promised myself that wouldn't happen again. i normally start in dec or jan and dont let up until the second week in aug. this year i found a parking garage with 6 floors total and i wore that place out and it has helped more than anything i have tried. I do still drag a tire around the neighborhood once or twice i week too.

Same thing happened to me. First elk hunt 3 years ago, spent half a day with a guy that illustrated to me just how sad my strength and conditioning really was. When I got home I told my wife that wouldnt happen again and have stayed with mostly 4 day a week workouts year round since then. Jan -June I lean more towards general strength with some cardio and then switch to more cardio and slightly lessen the strength side. This year I added running stairs instead of the stairmonster and like you said it has made a big difference. Couple of weeks ago started adding weight and walking the stairs and training hikes with 50#. Hikes have been noticeably easier this year. Hope it translates to the mountains again. Every year since the first trip has been significantly better.

WOW.....I feel like I should delete my entry and start a “minor leagues” post after seeing some of these times/floors. Keep at it, season is coming quick!
